Amazon still looking at opening South African data centre

Yip, called this a while back. Amazon can't afford losing all their big clients to Azure locally, because I'd suspect that Azure can now whip their ass from a latency perspective for South African customers.

Also isn't PUBG hosted on AWS, so with local hosting the ping will improve?
 
They went on enquiry already for the building. Seems like it's going up in Cape Town

Nope, no local servers so you will still connect to int. servers. The PUBG developers already said the local player base is to small for a local server.

The second MS announced their local presence, it was merely a matter of time before Amazon did the same thing. It will be interesting to see if Amazon do a colo type setup or build an entire DC for themselves. I personally think they'll go the colo route eventually purely due to the size of the market not warranting a full standalone DC just yet.
 
This would be a good opertunity for teraco I suppose?

If Amazon is not going to build their own DC

I disagree, huge market here. AWS can really disrupt the industry if they try. Teraco needs some competition... (if you can even compare the two)

Given the spend to build a new DC, the rest of Africa would need to qlmost exclusively use an Sa DC to justify the cost... Our market is miniscule in comparison to us and Europe and Asia

Amazon has shown time and time again that they are willing to dish out the $$$ - Amazon is looking long term, think 10 years from now.

I don't disagree but Amazon have also shown themselves to be prudent many times... Why build a standalone DC when its not necessary and you can use a Colo facility while you build out your market presence

There objective would not be to disrupt the industry. They also aren't into charity.

It would need to fit into their plans and depend how long they are willing to wait for that kind of an investment to generate positive returns etc

From what I've seen and been told, AWS racks are already in Teraco, so are MS Azure. I can't say for sure the timeline, but the kit is labelled AWS. I suspect that as one goes live the other will be up within a day or so.
 
This is a great glimmer of hope for us gamers.

Locally hosted servers for some Blizzard games? Yes please!

I think, game devs need to use another instance, which is not cheap. Their userbase will determine that, if they want it. It's easier to create a good netcode that may negate lag up to 500ms and keep fewer instances.
