Water from Air

Just an update.

My a/c has a dehumidifying option. I ran it in this setting for 24 hours to test it and managed to extract 50l of condensate during this time.

We stopped using the dishwasher and using the condensate to wash the dishes as well as to top up the cisterns.

The water won't have any of the minerals like calcium, sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, iron, zinc, chromium. They aren't in huge quantities but do change the taste of water and contribute to the minerals needed in our diet.

So use a supplement then?

That's pretty frikken interesting. I filled my bucket up from my old bedroom AC. I still think that is impressive on its own.

But will have to try my newer lounge AC - it's a 24000 btu. Will read up on it's specs to see if it has some sort of dehumidifying option, as you say.

Edit: it seems it does. Will explore further.

I was also impressed with the amount of water collected.

Setting on my remote and manual below. Only problem is that you cannot set the temperature of the a/c when in dehumidifying mode.

Feel mode = Auto
Cool mode = Normal a/c mode
Dry = Dehumidify mode
Fan only mode
Heat mode

Water from air? Anyone have one of these machines?

Being based in Cape Town I am seriously investigating my options in terms to get through the coming months once day zero hits and to minimise the amount of time I need to spend in queues collecting water (assuming things don't go Mad Max on us). One of the things I am looking at is one of these water from air machines that basically condenses water from the air, and, if it works as claimed, can produce up to 32 liters of water per day.

Now an engineer I know has said that these machines are "expensive" to run (wow, R30 per day according to his and his friends estimates, compared to R20 per 5l bottle) and that they can be very noisy (we did run a dehumidifer in our bathroom when we were redoing the tiles, and while it wasn't unbearably loud, it wasn't exactly quiet either). I was a little bit discouraged by this.

That being said, I read in the paper the other day that one of the local hotels has picked up one of the bigger machines and is running it, so I am again investigating my options.

Does anyone have one of these machines at home? From who did you purchase it? Does it work roughly as advertised? What are your noise levels like? Costs? Is it producing as much water as it claims?

You can buy a water distiller machine, recommend by doctors, for humans. It is just clear water without anything.

The myth that you need to get nutrients in the water or else you're going to die just won't go away.

On related note, I'm thinking that stove/weber/solar heating + ocean water will be my strategy when day 0 arrives.

Nice video of guys doing it:

Sure you can drink it, but its distilled water so its not recommended for daily consumption.

Distilled water is perfectly safe for drinking. It is hypotonic so you'll need to augment your diet, something like that rehydrate crap will work well.

This is brilliant and I like that you're only limited by how much sea water you can collect. The after taste though. I'll have to try distilled water to understand what they're talking about.

Water from Air machines

Has anyone bought one of these Water from Air machines that uses condensation to make water? Thinking of getting one, but would like some opinions from people who own them and also curious about it's electricity usage.
