Now I'm properly confused, the new Thai-built Yaris is in SA & it replaces the Euro-spec Yaris which was updated in Europe & SA just a few months ago! What on earth...I would have thought they would have kept the Euro-source model & then bring in low spec Thai-built models & pitch it as a "Yaris Lite" or possibly just above the Etios but no they bin the current few months old Euro model & replace it with an Asian-built one...wth?! Slightly less power as well & that arse does not work!

Toyota Yaris (2018) Specs and Pricing

Toyota South Africa has launched a new Yaris hatchback in an effort to steal sales from its rivals in the hotly-contested compact hatchback segment. Here are specs and pricing for the all-new Yaris.

Since its debut in the South African market back in 2005, the Toyota Yaris has seen some stiff competition and it didn't quite deliver big sale volumes. With the market constantly evolving, Toyota South Africa has decided to launch a new Yaris, which is claimed to be bigger and better.

The new Toyota Yaris has grown by 165 mm in length and 5 mm in width, resulting in luggage capacity increasing by 8% to 310 litres compared to the outgoing model. Cabin space has also increased. There are 7 colours to choose from including Diamond Silver Metallic, Attitude Black, Glacier White, Crimson Metallic, Graphite Grey as well as Inferno Metallic and Dark Blue metallic.

Engine Output

There's just one engine powering the entire range. It's a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol, offering up 79 kW and 140 Nm. You have a choice of either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) to drive the front wheels. Fuel economy is claimed at 5.9 and 5.8 L/100km, for the manual and CVT respectively.

The cabin of the all-new Toyota Yaris now offers more space than the outgoing model.

Specification and trim levels

There are 4 trim levels available. Kicking off the range is the Xi, with the X sitting in the middle and then a Cross derivative and a Sport model perched at the summit of the range. Cross and Sport models have special visual exterior kits.

Xi Features

Keyless entry and push-button start, 4-speaker audio system with USB and Bluetooth functionality, multi-information display, electrically-adjustable exterior mirrors, front power windows, electric power steering and manual air-conditioning.

Xs Features

Same as Xi, but with automatic lights, 16-inch alloy wheels, retractable exterior mirrors, rear power windows, leather steering wheel and gear knob, steering switches as well as LED daytime running lights.

Cross Features

Same as Xs, but featuring roof rails, black side moulding, brushed metal apron treatment (front and rear) and black over fenders.

Sport Features

Red-stitched leather steering wheel and gear knob, 2 additional speakers (6 in total), high-definition ‘Optitron’ instruments, leather seats, climate control air conditioning, front fog lamps, projector headlamps, LED rear taillights, rear boot spoiler, shark-fin antenna, side skirts, front and rear spoilers, dark metallic front grille, projector headlamps and a red accent stripe.

A big step up for the Yaris comes in the form of the new touchscreen infotainment system. While it has the standard FM/AM radio, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, the big news is that there's now full smartphone integration and support via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Whilst CarPlay uses standardised Apple applications with Siri integration, Android users are able to fully customise which ‘apps’ they would like to ‘mirror’ on the audio screen. Satellite navigation is thrown in too.

The new Yaris features a smart infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

Safety Features

The 2018 Toyota Yaris is also well equipped in the safety department and all models across the range feature driver and passenger airbags, ISOFIX points, ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), seat belt pre-tensioner and force limiters as well as Hill Assist Control (HAC). The Sport models come with additional airbags, specifically curtain and driver's knee airbags.

Toyota Yaris (2018) Price in South Africa

All Yaris models come with a 3-year/45 000 km service plan and 3-year/100 000 km warranty. Customers additionally have the option of upgrading the above to a longer term/and or higher mileage through Toyota Value added services. Service intervals are set at 15 000 kilometres.

Toyota SA switches to larger, Asian-market Yaris...

Toyota South Africa Motors has dropped its French-built (European-market) Yaris hatchback in favour of the larger Asia-spec model.

Measuring some 165 mm longer than the outgoing Yaris, the new Asian-market version of the hatchback (facelifted in countries such as Thailand in September 2017) features both more interior and luggage space (the latter now a claimed 300 litres), and vastly different styling.

Like the outgoing line-up, the new range comprises five derivatives, although the entry-level 1,0-litre model falls away, effectively raising the starting price from R201 000 to R230 800. The previously range-topping hybrid model, too, will no longer be offered.

Each of the five new variants is powered by a naturally aspirated 1,5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that sends 79 kW and 140 N.m (down 3 kW and up 4 N.m compared with the outing 1,5-litre) to the front wheels. Models equipped with a five-speed manual transmission sip at a claimed 5,9 L/100 km and top out at 180 km/h, while the single CVT derivative comes in at 5,8 L/100 km and 170 km/h.

Toyota Yaris The line-up comprises four trim levels. The base Xi model features keyless entry (with a start button), a four-speaker sound system (with USB and Bluetooth functionality), electrically adjustable side-mirrors, electric windows up front and manual air-conditioning.

The Xs trim adds a touchscreen system (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, as well as satellite navigation), 16-inch alloys (instead of 15-inch steelies), automatic headlamps, retractable side-mirrors, electric windows at the rear, a leather multifunction steering wheel and LED daytime running lights.

The Cross variant furthermore features roof-rails, black cladding, “brushed metal” apron treatment and black over-fenders. Lastly, the flagship Sport model gains items such as a red-stitched leather steering wheel, leather seats, climate control, front foglamps, projector headlamps, LED taillights, a boot spoiler, side skirts and a model-specific front grille.

Interestingly, all models feature just two airbags (driver and front passenger), bar the flagship Sport variant, which adds side, curtain and driver knee airbags. Other safety features standard across the range include ABS with EBD, stability control, hill assist control and Isofix child-seat anchors.

As before, all models feature a three-year/100 000 km warranty and a three-year/45 000 km service plan (with intervals of 15 000 km).

Pricing:

Toyota Yaris 1,5 Xi: R230 800
Toyota Yaris 1,5 Xs: R253 400
Toyota Yaris 1,5 Xs CVT: R268 500
Toyota Yaris 1,5 Cross: R268 500

Bigger, Thai-built Toyota Yaris launched in SA

It takes just one glance at any sales chart from the past few years to tell that Toyota’s latest-generation Yaris, first launched in 2011, has not been much of a success on local shores and one can't blame the segment - just look at how many Polos and Fiestas are finding homes.

Hoping to finally get a bigger slice of that action, Toyota South Africa will now be playing its B-segment hatch game with a completely different version of the Yaris, imported from Thailand.

This “new” Yaris, which is making its debut in South Africa this week, is not related to the Yaris that you’ve known until now, and which will continue in its current form in most global markets.

Essentially a facelifted version of the Asian-market Yaris that was introduced back in 2013, and looking very much like a baby Auris, this Thai-built Yaris is somewhat larger than the global model - with length increasing by 165mm. It’s also lower and wider than the model it replaces, while boot space grows from 286 litres to 310, although it appears bigger than that.

Although it might in some ways appear to be a more budget-oriented model, Toyota SA has in fact positioned it directly against the new-generation Polo, with prices ranging from R230 800 to R286 000.

All versions are powered by a 1.5-litre normally aspirated VVT-i petrol engine that delivers 79kW and 140Nm. It is mated to either a five-speed manual or CVT continuously variable transmission.

Four trim grades are on offer in the form of Xi, Xs, Cross and Sport.

Xi kicks things off with standard air conditioning, a four-speaker sound system with Bluetooth connectivity, electric mirrors and windows (front) as well as dual front airbags, stability control and ABS brakes. The Xi rolls on 15-inch covered steel wheels.

The big drawcard in the Xs (above) is a touchscreen infotainment system featuring navigation, WiFi, customisable home screen as well as Apple CarPlay compatibility. In addition, Xs models gain 16-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, a multifunction leather-covered steering wheel and rear power windows. The Xs is the only model available with the CVT gearbox.

The Cross (above) gets all the aforementioned goodies, but adds an SUV-inspired styling kit featuring roof rails, black side-body and wheel-arch mouldings and brush metal apron treatment front and rear.

The range-topping Sport adds leather seats, automatic climate control, ‘Optitron’ high-definition instruments, two additional speakers and red stitching on the steering wheel and gear knob.

Its name is a stylistic reference only, however, with red accent stripes, side skirts, dark metallic front grille, projector headlights, front foglights, LED taillights and a rear spoiler telling it apart from other models.

The Sport flagship also gains side, curtain and (driver) knee airbags.

All new Yaris models are sold with a three-year/45 000km service plan and three-year/100 000km warranty.

We’re currently attending the launch in the Durban area, so stay tuned for driving impressions.

79kw from a 1.5 litre - surely it can get more power from that plant

To my knowledge I think it's probably the only Toyota in SA that has this.

Yes, this is new. Toyota has finally decided to come to the party with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Initially they were resistant to introduce this but I think they lost a lot of sales as a result.

Saw it in Thailand a few weeks ago. Looks good. The pics don't look that great though.

The sedan also looks quite good.

Eish...I suppose buyers of the 2017 facelift model are not too pleased, as their cars became "old" in just a few months...

I am not a big Toyota fan, and don't like their new styling of recent years, but I feel this new one looks more "Toyota-ish" than the one it replaces. Except for the interior - there it is the other way around. The new one's interior is a step back.

Interesting to see how the Yaris has grown, it looks quite big in these pictures - I would reckon it is now almost similar in size than older generation Auris/RunX models?

And FiestaST, interesting that both the 2017 and this 2018 thread were started on 7 February, that is a funny coincidence :)

Looks like I have seen this car before, just don't know where!

Reminds me of an American flying cockroach.
