MTN announces price changes for prepaid call rates

Old school prices making a comeback one price adjustment at a time. The good ol'days are almost here boys.

50% increase? SHAME ON YOU eMpTy N

I know, right?!! My signal with Telkom can be a bit spotty sometimes, but every article like this makes me happier I'm with them. Let's just hope they don't also catch the fever.

But... But... But this is (almost) aligned to the 1% VAT increase from 1 April

Poor mtn

Now this is MASSIVE.

A 1.51x increase.

Shame on you MTN.

Time to switch to CellC or Telkom or VoIP or WhatApp calling.

O’Sullivan said the price changes that take place on 23 March are part of the prepaid overhaul, and not linked to recent VAT-related price hikes...

"...and while people are hit with the VAT increase, we'll just quickly add another 200lbs of flesh while we're at it...I mean most (uninformed) people will just write it off as "VAT" and move on, not even questioning it. That's how we roll."

True ! And those not informed start protesting against the Vat increase thinking the Vat caused this price Hike.

Many companies are doing this.
Obviously this is a concern that must be registered. I received 4 emails saying due the Vat increase the Company is also increasing tariffs over and above the 1%.

We need to make treasury aware of this.

The level of garbage coming out of her mouth to try and sweettalk this pile of gunk. A for effort.
Just to bad we are not all ID10Ts.

Amazing how South Africa call prices increase which is generally against the norm of call price dropping. Oh wait we need to pay VAT increase to support corruption, BEE donations

It seems they are inflating prices to pre-empt any regulations regarding data prices coming later this year.

MTN hasnt even updated their website - useless

I wonder what CPA is going to say about this. Thing is it's prepaid so no real terms or anything.

I would like to swap to a new option but given the website is outdated, cant even choose something else

As a customer impacted by this increase, a per-minute rate of R0.99 is far from competitive and just the kind of complacent nonsense that led to me leaving Vodacom after many years. If there was a corresponding reduction in data rates, it would be better news - if this only follows later, MTN have just made a big PR blunder. These seem to be the actions of a company in trouble, are they? No matter either way, I can count on my fingers how many mobile calls I make in a normal month.
