Hi, i just wanted to check if anyone else has had the same problem and if anyone knows if there was a way around it...

i just got the orange box for pc and installed HL2 EP2, Portal and some mini game called Peggle Extreme, after the games showed up in my steam games list they started updating and wouldn't let me play until they were done, it has now been almost 3 days and they're almost done updating, so far i've used roughly 5-6G of my adsl for the updates, wtf?!

i noticed that there's a second disc in the orange box set that was never required for the installation, could that be the stuff i chose not to install or what?

this really sux, i thought i was getting the orange box at a bargain for R350 but then i end up paying an extra R360 (R60x6) for my adsl cap!!

anyone else have the same prob?

Whoa thats heavy, most of the guys with it claimed a +-50MB download.

ouch...it looks like something must've gone wrong in your installation, because I just bought the orange box like 3 days ago, I admit the update took a while, but it was only like 50mb.

For install I used 2 disks...i think you must've downloaded all that was on the 2nd disc :o

I bought the Orange Box through steam only and it was just over 6GB total to download all the games entirely. Somethings up with your install I would say. The latest updates arent that big.

You gotta love Steam.

Get home, relax, make coffee, double click Portal and .. ... ... Steam is updating ... ... .. steam seems to die so I wait.. then.. Steam is checking for game updates.

I know you can turn off the updates... but still, this crap is really starting to bother me.

all this hype of steam... only problem ive had with it was, it only needs me 2 b online so it can scream "UPDATE YOUR F'ING DRIVERS"... once i do that, click-click, offline ftw

i also used both discs for Orange Box, only game i didnt install was TF2 (if i want 2 play with other ppl, i log onto wow)

wow 6 gig:eek:thats BS.yip something is really wrong:eek: there. With that 6 gig cap u could have dl the game instead of buying it.Steam updates is pretty big:( but not that big.

Yea there is that problem....

It's got to do with when you install the game's something goes wrong I don't know why!

this should help! :D

I discovered on the web that it is an issue with the install and you need to start the install on steam, then disconnect, autorun the DVD again and click on re-install, this makes it install from the DVD, but only 98% (Stops people copying the DVD) the other 2% odd comes from steam

I am uncapped but WILL NEVER sit through a 6GB download on my 64k line!!

BTW! how big is it after the actual install?? 6GB 10GB?? lol I need to know cause I might need a new HDD :D
*EDIT*
Found it :D

Half life 2 -841MB
Episode 1- 606MB
Episode 2 - 1338MB
Portal- 985MB
Team fortress 2- 1379MB

Thats about 4GB's :D I have enough!

i think it has to do with how you install the game. once steam has been installed you have to run install again from the disks. this installs the game from the disk. if you just go to steam it installs from the net.

Steam is not very friendly. It told me CSS was 3gb and downloaded 4 .

Thats your problem, I almost downloaded the games myself. I installed HL2 ep 1 + 2 and Portal, all the updates came to about 200mb (I think) most of it went to episode 1...

Steam really blows, its automatically set to "automatically download updates". I feel sorry for people who buy Orange Box and have dial-up...

I last played Portal a week ago. What was wrong with it last week that they needed to fix with a 5-10MB update? I personally think that every update helps 10 000 users but scrues another 5000 so they try and fix the thing that scrued the 5000 and it works, but now 20 000 new users cant play anymore..why cant I choose which updates I want, like most normal games out there.

You can tell steam not to update specific games.

Yes you can, but I've recently formatted, and backed up my SteamApps directory. When I re-installed Steam its set to automatically download updates, so when I disable it, its already too late because Steam's already started updating, and you cant play until the update is done...

Maybe I'm too slow, maybe I could have prevented the latest update, but I doubt it.

took a loooong time to get OB installed, played TF2 portal and Just started on EP2... PC Bsoded and now I have to update steam YAY!!

Aerocrap is so shaped It is imposilbe to update during the day heck even past 12pm it sometimes won't update!!

I think most of the time it's our ISP's that shape traffic and cause steam to cap out :(

The worst part is, you can't sell your Steam games individually, I bought Dark Messiah, want to flog it to a friend, you can't .. it's bound to your Steam account.
