how to identify a soundcard

Hi :)
Got a soundcard lying around here in the office, it looks fairly new but it doesnt have a name on it & no driver cd. Windows cannot find drivers & universal drivers dont work either. Is there a program out that can identify it so i can download the appropriate driver?

Look at it, look for the model number, there is always a model number on it, on the front, on the back, on a the top of the chips etc... do a google for that and you'll find out all the info you need.
That's how I do it.

What he said. Basically just search for a product ID... any type of product or model number, and google it. Sometimes you have to google the actual chips on it to find what you are looking for.

that's the long and frustrating way. he said he could not see anything so that ain't gonna help :confused:
 
so simple..

stick it into the machine and boot up, hopefully you using xp sp2 or later.
find your unknown device in device manager, go to properties, details tabe.
change the drop down to "hardware id's"
now, you will see something like
PCI\VEN_1039&DEV_0900&SUBSYS_0C5D105B&REV_91
(this is for a sis network adapter)
then number you are interested in are after ven_ and after dev_ (vendor id and device id)
stick them into
www.pcidatabase.com and it will tell you what the thing is.

Thnx, this method worked best.
Turns out the card is a C Media 8768.

This any better than a onboard Realtek AC'97?
