Cape Town Protest - 20th & 21st of November 2005. In front of Parliament (Roeland Street Side). If anyone needs a map on how to get there, let me know.

All volunteers can email [email protected] . We are also looking for anyone who can donate laptops and web cams (we want to broadcast the protest live onto the internet). Where looking for anyone who can help us out on those two days as we would also like to run an information desk.

Feel free to bring your laptop down and plug in to our wireless network. Anyone who can help assist on the technical side off things either with more equipment/bandwidth/time would be gladly appreciate.

Were also open for any ideas for the protest and suggestions.

Aha!

I have been visualising for some time now that a march on parliament would promote awareness to the fight against the Monopolistic Telecommunications Market we have in South Africa and the failure of our own Government to actually do anything meaningful to change the status quo.
Most South Africans are too passive to see anything for themselves unless it is spelt out for them on TV or by some other form of media.
The trouble is that here in South Africa only a few people can actually afford the internet and are hardly aligned with the fight that MyADSL, Hellkom and Antitrust etc have brought to the fore in recent years.
Marching on Parliament is suggestive that all hope is lost from normal channels. South Africans are well aware that active protests have got clout and meaning and it should drive the message home.

I think a march on parliament in Roeland Street will help and I hope there will be a good turnout of supporters.
I notice the date of the 20th and 21st of November coincides with Voter Registration which almost seems ironic as we lose faith with I/ECASA and the DOC who simply seem to be dragging their feet and the fight has now been elevated to a political level.

Over and above a show of numbers, I think a hand held banner/flag or two would be useful for visual impact representing Hellkom, MyADSL and Antitrust etc.

I could contribute to a Banner/Flag.
It would have to be done as matter of urgency however.
I will make enquiries this morning. I think I know a person who can make us several banners.

is there a specific time on the days? would like to alert the parliamentary media

Nice one people, unfortuantely I'll be in Durban that weekend, so I'll be there in spirit and watching enews at 7.

I'm pretty sure you've all done your homework, so what I'm about to add may be already covered, but this is my input:

I'm sure you'll at least get onto Enews, since nothing happens on weekends anyway. SABC may ignore you, but try anyway. I'm sure you've already sent out press releases to enews/sabc TV and radio, 702, and other print media.

Also send the same press release to SAPA (www.sapa.org.za), they will release it on the SA news wire and every news organisation in the country will see it. The sooner you get out the release the better the media can prepare for coverage.

From the "Would You March Against Telkom thread",

News coverage of a march like this would go something like this.

News anchor, "Today x amount of people protested outside CT parliament, against the high costs of ADSL access in South Africa."

1. A wide of the group (the bigger the better - but if not huge they just film closer so it looks good) 5 seconds
2. A medium shot. 5 seconds
3. A close up on some faces as people sing or chant, etc. 5 seconds
4. Some of the placards banners 5 seconds
5. Soundbites of 1 or 2 of the group members (5 seconds each)
6. Soundbite from a group leader for Antitrust (15-30 Seconds)
7. Comment from Telkom (15 to 30 Seconds) (Or more likely, "Telkom was unavailable for comment."
8. Handing over letter of demands 5 seconds.
8. Reporter stand up. 20 to 30 seconds. These protestors are angry about capping, the price over 1000% higher than UK, etc. According to the UN, South Africa falls x far behind other devleoping countries, blah blah blah

Max report time about 2 minutes.

GOOD LUCK! AND SEE YOU ON TV!

I'd love to join you -- but this doesn't sound like much of a protest. Are we going to be making noise or making tea?

I'll definately make a turn down there on Sunday and perhaps sneak away from work on Monday too. :)

Can you please give us the rundown on how the protest is going to be made effective enough for Parliament to take us seriously? Is the pertition going to be handed over ... and when?

to me if less than 20 people arrive its more of a joke and embarresment than a protest we need commited members to go a list of people who are commited to....

'

SO I think we need some more details about the protest. I'm still in the dark at what to expect so I haven't told many people yet. So: whats the plan for the protest?

I would love to contact the guys on SLUG and CLUG to join us....

Legal?

Is this protest legal or should we be drawing cash for the bail?
I fancy not a night in jail.:D

Perhaps contact some of the unions, like Cosatu? Involve them from a "Telkom costs South Africa jobs" point of view...
