Hi, I tried installing a Huawei E220 modem on Windows Vista, only the emulated CD-ROM device was detected, not the modem device and the two COM devices.
When I tried to access the emulated CD-ROM device I got the message:
E:\ is not accessible.
The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.
I found the following workaround here:
Work-Around: You need another PC/Laptop and a USB Pen/Key Drive to do this:
1) Connect the E220 to your XP PC/Laptop
2) access the emulated CD Drive and copy all the Contents onto a USB Pen Drive.
3) Disconnect the E220 and the Pen Drive
4) Connect the Pen Drive to your Vista PC and install the software using the Autorun.exe file (Run as Administrator)
5) Connect the E220 - Vista will only recognize a USB Mass Storage Device and the emulated CD drive which it cannot access.
6) Open the Device Manager (in the Control Panel)
7) Look for the USB Mass Storage Device in the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" Section

If there are more than one USB Mass Storage Devices, right click each one,
select Properties, Details and then "Children"
If it says "Huawei" somewhere inside the Value, you found the right one.

8) Right click on the Mass Storage Device and select "Update Driver Software"
9) Select "Browse my Computer"
10) Select "Let me pick"
11) Uncheck "Show compatible devices"
12) Select "(Generic USB Host Controller)" in the Manufacturer Tab
13) Select "USB Composite Device" in the Model Tab
14) Finish installing the Composite Device driver
15) Afterwards, Vista will add another USB Mass Storage Device, and if you are lucky, also 2 "Data Interfaces"
16) If it doesn't detect the Data Interfaces, disconnect and reconnect your E220.
17) Vista should now detect all the E220s Data Interfaces
18) When asked to insert the disk containing the drivers, choose "I don't have the disk"
19) Enter the \Drivers\WinXP Subfolder of your USB Pen Drive
20) Repeat Step 18&19 for the second Data Interface
21) Start your Huawei Mobile Connect (Web'n'Walk Manager) Software, and connect :)
Worked fine for me, although it the emulated CD-ROM device is still reported as "corrupted and unreadable".
Definitely going to format that drive now!

workaorund doesn' appear to work

i tried the workaround as shown here but alas it does not work.
i can send sms's from the card, but cannot connect.
when i try connect it just tells me that i need to check the settings.

anybody else got this working?

any ideas what those connection settings should be? i just left the default, which appear to be the same as those on my XP machine where it works fine.

thanks
Ryan

any ideas when MTN will have updated Vista drivers out for this device?
when i first enquire they said it was not supported because the OS had not been released.

well now Vista is official and you can buy it anywhere.
i asked at the MTN shop in Village Walk and they just said that it was in testing, but couldn't tell me when we could expect it.

anybody from MTN here?

The E220 firmware update and dashboard software is busy being tested as we speak, I've got some test drivers which is around 6 megs if want to try it and your own risk I can send it to you but I'm prefer you wait for the final released version

I've done my own E220 with the Firmware update and Dashboard update and it's working hundreds on my PC running Windows Vista

You have to create a new modem connection. If you go to your XP, you'll see a modem connection. Replicate it in Vista. I'm from Spain, and in my case, the phone number to call was *99#.

It worked for me; I'm replying to your post on my HSDPA connection under Windows Vista.

Hey MTN, can you please send me those drivers as well?

I'm trying hard to install the E220 on my vista business and no can do...

My Vista detects a Huawei modem, not some storage cards...
It detects Huawei storage as well.. but no success on loading the modem or data storage drivers..
a code 10 occurs.

Now. I've been able (I really don't know exactly why) to have the USB data storages appearing, but right after i did the "Generic" thing that is listed on those instructions, the next step should be like 2 DATA interfaces apear.. well, they DON'T.. ever...

I'm going away next weekend and I'm really upset because I need this for my work...

can any one help?

Can YOU send me those drivers please?

[email protected]

Please.
