Nokia N97 from Vodacom

i've been trying no1 seems to know. phoned the upgrade call centre this morning and I was told they can't even confirm if they're getting the phone!

Anyone else??? pls i need this phone!! haha

I e-mailed Vodacom and they confirmed they will definately be supplying it - just a question of when stock will be released to the shops. General consensus seems to be 7 July (next week Tuesday) when the July specials and pricelists are also released.

I compared the 5800xm to the N97 and besides the "slightly" bigger screen, qwerty kb (only major difference but worth R3200?)and "slightly" faster processor there is no difference. Rather save the R3200 for something else and get the 5800xm

Yes, there's that and also the 32GB of built in storage, the 5MP camera, faster processor and front camera for video call. Together with the qwerty keybord - I'll rather take the N97.

Lols, I get the feeling that there are many people out there that want this phone just for status and to brag. It's just amazing lol!

Funny to read a comment like that. Thought we passed that stage in the late 90's. The days when a mobile phone impressed anybody is long gone. Anyone can have any phone. :o

strange, my 5800 has a front camera.

New Nokia firmware was released today. Feedback from Nokia:

I am sure you guys are all interested to know how testing has been going, and we are pleased to report that at the labs the new fw is ready, and we are finalising the upgrade and distribution method ready for this Wednesday

There have been over 100 fixes and improvements, I shall cover the main ones:

the lock/unlock/backlight bug has been fixed. This was caused by the handset not reporting autolock correctly and thought it was still unlocked, despite the backlight being switched off which is independant. When users were trying to unlock their handset, they were infact locking it, and then unlocking it.

There have been some subtle changes to the way the interface responds. For example, the phonebook now has kinetic scrolling, and swiping the screen sideways to hide the homescreen has been taken further, so that swiping when in primary functions such as phonebook, application menu and a few others will revert the screen back. This is also the case for the web browser. The way the home screen and main menus were rendered has also been refined. Screens will load up quicker, and the phone will use idle time between user presses to load items just off screen, scrolling is also much improved by this.

Nokia Maps application has been given a new look, while positioning accuracy has been improved. The time taken from starting the application to getting a lock has been improved, with times around 8 seconds or less when in combination with A-GPS. The door-to-door has also been improved, with walking routes giving audio feedback as well, direct to house.

When the phone went through different primary connections for data, such as 3g packet, or Wifi, certain widgets became stuck in a loop where they continuously recieving a null from the previous connection method. The phone has a new feature for developers that 'shouts' when a connection is changed, in addition to lost. The widgets have been updated accordingly and we have updated our knowledge base accordingly.

When large videos were played through quickly, sometimes the screen went black as the video information could not sync up with the raw video data quick enough. This was especially apparent when skipping through multiple videos quickly. This has been addressed by caching the first 30 frames of each video before allowing playback to commence and we have had no problems of this kind.

Community made applications that began on phone start up, and then got stuck in an error loop were unable to terminate or uninstall. We have addressed this by adding a terminate now feature to the application menu. When switching application, holding down on the application will display the option to do so.

The pictures and video clips made with the phone sometimes did not update in the photo/video library after files had been manually added via a transfer. This was due to the way in which files were counted and stored by phone conflicting with the number of files present on the device and has been resolved.

Text messaging now has the option to confirm sending once the green button/send button is pressed. An option was also added to prevent accidental sending of blank messages.

The symbols menu has been updated to include french, german and spanish special characters.

H264 decoding is now supported! The ovi suite has also been updated to automaticly convert most common video formats to the native phone display resolution and format.

And a big one last for you guys...
Multitouch support has been added. The paint application has been updated to show this in practical use, and photos can be zoomed in and out by squashing or streching the image. Again the knowledge base was updated to provide developers the new input fuction should they wish to take advantage.

Update - seems Cell C have this phone available. Phoned local shop today and they say it takes about 3 working days to order since they do not keep stock in store.

Also, some Vodashops apparently getting it next week Wednesday (8 July).

P.S. It seems not all shop staff are as well informed about this phone. Some mistake it for the N79 and one lady even insisted that I had the model number wrong. If you pre-order, make sure they don't make this mistake.

Why do we hear so little about the N97 locally? (Piesang...?)

Anyone else planning on getting one when they eventually become available, or have you also been put off by the initial reviews?

I'm not planning on getting the N97 just yet. At the moment I still have the joys of using my N96 and 5800XM.

Maybe my next upgrade.

ive been using it for 3 weeks now.
the reviews are all bull.

All the bad reviews were from the demo models. All the good reviews were from the final release. Hardware issues with keyboard, etc were all resolved. And besides, half the reviews out there are people with iphones that cant handle the fact that their phones cant forward sms's (well, until now) so they rip other phones.

A guy at work managed to get his on friday last week. Damn nice phone!
Got a built in fm broadcaster to stream your music from your phone thru the radio! That might get me to kick the ipod and itrip setup..

N97 on MTN

Hi guys,

This is my first post, been lurking for a while on the forum. I just got a call from MTN in Menlyn, my N97 is there waiting for me. Got a great deal as well. I'm paying R525pm on an Anytime 500 with no pay in

I was at the store about a month ago and asked the people when they were expecting the N97. They told me that it would be in August. I put my name on the list, I was the first one, and told them that I want an excellent deal. Then yasterday he phoned me and said they have my phone. Asked what package I would like to upgrade to I told him the Anytime 500 and he did the calcs and got me the great deal. I'm going through later today to collect my N97
