Nokia N97 from Vodacom

To all the peeps who got their N97 already, congrats .. im gonna wait til MTN decide to fet off their butts and decide to promote this phone properly .. . the thing is when the N95 first hit our shore 2 years back, I was one of the 1st to get them, and at the time, as expected, MTN didnt have a price structure for N95, so I had to pay in R3500 ... the thing is, 1 month later, payin dropped to R 1900, and 2 months later, no payin required on Procall 120 ... so as much as I want it, Im gonna wait a little this time round .... besides, I still got my old faithful N95 to keep me company until then ....

and 2 months later, no payin required on Procall 120 ...

Those were the good old days when you could get a top-end phone for free on a Procall 120. I got a Imate K-Jam for free on a Procall 120, and at that time it was one of the top-of-the-range phones. Alas, those days are gone. Nowadays you can't get a top-end phone for free even on the R500 contract.

Hi guys,

Just some feedback. Went to MTN Menlyn yesterday to get the phone. They brought it out to me. And as I took it in my hands to have a look the store manager nearly had a heart attack. He took the box and phone and gave the salesman a piece of his mind. He then explained to me that all MTN stores have received their N97's but they are not allowed to sell them untill Monday when the new specials are out. He told me that the promotion price should be either R619pm or R629pm on Anytime 500. THe clerk that phoned gave me the price of the N79 as you guys mentioned.

Obviously I wasn't happy about this and made quite a scene. Eventually the manager made me a deal where he is going to courier the phone, for free, to me next week on Anytime 500 for the basic R509 pm and he is going to wave the pay-in amount. So I'm basically just going to be paying for the contract and not the phone. He also refunded my petrol for driving al the way there for nothing.

He was quite helpful. I was dissapointed I didn't get the phone, but I got a better deal instead.

I had an almost similar experience, just not as lucky. Ordered a "N97" via the phone on Monday afternoon, got a call today to come pick up my phone, drove through to my local Vodashop and was handed a brand-new Nokia N79.

When I told the lady it was not the phone I ordered she seemed to get a bit agitated and left to speak to another employee. Came back and informed me that the phone I wanted (N97) was not available from Vodashop. The cherry on the cake was when she then tried to convince to take the N79 since the only difference between it and the N97 was the slide-out QWERTY keyboard... At that stage I got up and left the shop.

It really seems some (not all) Vodashop staff is not expected to be informed in anyway at all about the products they sell or are about to sell to the public.

Me - still searching for my Nokia "N79" with it's QWERTY keyboard.

I've just ordered a N97 from Nashua Mobile and have been told that I will get it next week. Apart from the Built in storage and and and, it also displays and records video in 16 x 9 aspect ratio, just hope it doesn't slow down like the N95 once a few apps have been added.

Nashua Mobile is looking good

I've been checking out the N97 for about 2 weeks now. Really like the features.

My best bet so far for sourcing it seems to be Nashua Mobile. They seem to be a lot better than any of the others I've dealt with.

For example, you go to Vodashop and ask about it, and they say, sorry we don't have it. And that's that. In fact that's always been my experience with Vodashop. If you want a particular phone, chances are you'll be better off with Nashua Mobile. I will probably move to them.

The edge that Nashua Mobile has is that you can select *any* phone you like and it seems to be a bit more up to date. The N97 doesn't even appear on Vodacom's website yet, so don't even try your luck with Vodashop. How weird is it that Vodacom is behind ?

Nice thing about Nashua Mobile is also that you can choose whatever package and network you like. Click the "Apply" button to find out how much it's going to cost you in total.

Hope this helps somebody.

I want it in White, for crying out loud!

Okay, on another subject, I'd really like to get the N97 in white.

So far, I've been told that I can't choose the colour.
Apparently, the colour is 'not even printed on the box any more' and 'different colours are approved for different networks'.

Is that dum or what!

Can anyone please explain why we as consumers are denied the right to choose the product we buy? I mean, if you're going for a top phone like the N97, you should at least get to choose the colour !

So my questions to the community are:
1) Do you know if I can be sure to get it in White with Vodacom?
2) If not, with which other network?
3) Has anybody out there got it in White, and if so, where from and did you get to choose the colour ?

Any feedback will be much appreciated.

Seems locally the service provider decides which colour you will like. Found this on Hellopeter - http://www.hellopeter.co.za/vodacom-unwilling-to-satisfy-[293317]

The funny thing ...

The funny thing about this is that the N97 only comes in two colours - black and white. Why not just sell it in Black and White and give the customer the choice, for crying out loud.

I don't buy the response from Vodacom on Hellopeter. Sorry.

I think cellular providers in this country need to learn that people don't like their decisions to be made for them. I'm pretty much at the point now where I will go with whichever provider can give me the N97 in White. After all, if the service provider is deciding on the colour, then let them decide that the colour I ask for is the best one for me.

I've seen a list of product codes for the N97 which suggest that maybe it's Nokia who's deciding and not the service provider, but I'm not so sure about that.
- Maybe someone has an idea on this?

Why does getting a new phone always feel like you don't have the best options available to you? ( I've only dealt with Vodashop ... )

Btw. I'd recommend the following site to anyone who wants to get a good look at a phone before getting it:

Another thing that's bugging me is the timing on getting an N97.

Apparently, it will be launched by Nokia in SA in August, so I'm thinking maybe now is a great time to get one before the demand goes up and the prices follow suit.

Anyone got any advice on this point?

I know the prices will go down after a few months, but I'm not sure about the change in prices between now and the official Nokia SA launch.

Wow I need this phone, wonder what the pay in will be on the Vodacom talk 240. Reason I'm on that package is because I need the peak minutes.

Finally got my N97

Hi guys,

I finally got my N97 today. And first impressions are WOW!! What a phone. The touchscreen is very responsive, doesn't need alot of pressure to select items. The clarity and resolution of the screen is amazing and the camera takes very good photos.

When I got to MTN they had the new specials out and the new HTC Touch Diamond 2 and the Touch Pro 2 are both available on contract. And they are damn good looking devices. I just don't like the WinMo OS.

So to everyone who wants a N97, GET IT!! You'll love it!!

Did you get it from MTN direct?

FINALLY....

After months of asking MTN - and being told time after time that it is not available in the country yet, even though other people seemed to be getting theirs.... I marched into my MTN store, with the specials list in hand that I got from this thread - to be told that I can get mine in the next day or two. This after being told on Saturday by the very same guy that it will take weeks to arrive.... eish....

Im happy, cant wait for it to arrive!

Real pity about the colour :)

I have a feeling we'll only be able to get it in black. At least from the providers that is. I'll try to post the link for the page where i saw the product codes. Only black in that list.

I really dont understand it. Let's hope someone else posts some good news re the colour. White please :(

but yeah, this phone is crack-a-lackin'. Can't wait to get mine. And agreed on WinMo. Not digging that, esp since i'm a linux user certifiably :)
