Nokia N97 from Vodacom

For anyone wondering, the N97 is now available from Vodacom. Stock expected to land this week. Deals have been sent out to the Vodashops aswell. Regarding the colour I am not sure what colour will be released. We have only once stock code to order on, so different colours not available as far as I can see. I will try and find out what colour we will be getting in.

Great news!

I was at Nashua Mobile saturday and they had it available. Not in store tho.

strange that vodashop is behind?

my upgrade is due in oct but i'd really like to get the n97 now. Anyone got any advice for me with regards to retaining my number?

@ocleroux

would the product code by any chance be 0585732?

that appears to be vodacom product code for n97 black.
To see the list of product codes, google nokiausers.net for "n97 product codes". Sorry, no copy paste on my device ...yet i hope

if this list is anything to go by, then its clear the decision on colour has already been made for us.

have to say that grates me somewhat

No...VSP assigns their own stock codes on our odering system. For example, for the LG KS360 we have 3 different codes...the they end in 360, 360R and 360P...normal, Red, Pink respectively. For the N97, we have only one code, meaning we will only carry one colour for now.

In a lot of cases it is not worth it to stock many colours of a certain model. Especially if it comes to high end models like the N97 that will go to adults. Adults tend to go for standard colours....normally black or silver etc. If you look for example at the LG KS360, which was and is very popular with the youngens...it is worth while to go for the funky colours as the demand is high. VSP orders huge amounts of a certain model...so to order thousands of one colour and then 50 of another colour logistically does not make sense. It has happened before where two colours is released by VSP, the one colour flies...and the other sits in the warehouse gathering dust. Can be a pickle as you can imagine.

The above is my explanation for it and how I would see it...not officially supplied by VSP.

Thanks for the insight ocleroux.

I'm just wondering how many other people prefer it in white (actually brilliant looking silver).

maybe we need to do a poll on that.

ocleroux, i take it you work for vsp or something? Do u know if they research the products before hand? Maybe someone thought it's really white, when in fact it is silver or pearlescent white if u will.

if u check out the n97 on the web you can see how cool the white model looks. Am i the only person who thinks this?

@ianmdev
I totally agree, the white looks sexy.
I'm getting my N97 tomorrow morning from MTN in Fourways Mall. They promised they're keeping one for me, and that it's N-Nine-Seven, not N79. Let's hope my asking them four times to confirm the model number didn't confuse them. I just wish I could get a white one.

The MTN at K90 Centre in Boksburg are getting N97's on Wednesday, and the new MTN at Cavendish Glen in Kempton Park on Friday. I phoned them ALL. :)

Pleas pleas post the colour :)

let's flip a coin. Heads for white, tails for black.

i'm hoping heads

If black is the only colour being made available locally, i say let's get together and petition for white!

how many individual users have posted on this thread alone?

if there's anyone else who really wants white and they don't want to give it to us, let's petition.

anyone got any ideas?

Sorry but mine is black and for now Nokia is only bringing in the Black N97. If the demand is high enough they might bring the White here as well. That is what the manager at MTN Menlyn told me yesterday.

This is not about the colour of the phone people, it's about 'free-dom'. Are u 'free' or are u 'dom'?

:)

Thanks for your feedback. So it looks like this list might actually be credible.

Interesting point on the demand. Understandable from their point of view, but how do you measure the demand? If we all go in there and say we want white and they give us that answer without actually doing anything, then the demand is not being measured.

So it looks like Nokia is the one who's choosing for us now?

As a matter of interest, did the N95, N95 8GB and N96 ever get released locally in anything other than black?

It realy sucks that the white ones arent available as yet they should have brought in both colours.I can only upgrade to the N97 in September so maybe if you guys create enough chaos the white one would be available by then:D

On another note could someone who has received their N97 please post an in-depth user review about its UI,camera, sensitivity of the resistive touchscreen, pros&cons, etc.

What I realy want to know about is how often does a situation arise where you have to use the external stylus?

I'm with you. Let's post it on Hellopeter or something :)

Is there anyone out there who knows how we can contact Nokia directly about this?

I'm getting the feeling the networks and providers are a bit out of touch with the situation. No-one has said "Nokia is deciding the colour based on the 'demand'" until now. And that came from MTN.

Do you ever walk in to a shop, looking for a new pair of shoes, and get the feeling the buyers have no clue what you actually want ?? That's how I feel about the N97 right now

I know someone who works for MTN so I'll see what I can find out. [ I've been considering switching from Vodacom, so if MTN can supply me a white N97 then now's the time ! ]

For an indepth review, have a look at http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n97-review-363.php.

Here is another review you might want to look at:
http://www.nokiausers.net/Reviews/White-UK-Variant-Nokia-N97-Review-Overview.html

The home page of that site has some more posts on the N97 that seem to be objective.

Hope this helps.

Here's a paragraph from the review on nokiausers.net (I posted the link earlier):

Yes, you get a Stylus with the N97, and this again is an area most critics have pulled Nokia up on, mostly because it’s not inbuilt into the N97, but comes separately, with a mini lanyard to attach it to your N97 with. I must say, I have not once used the stylus, but can see it coming in handy for those small clickable onscreen areas should you not of double tapped on the screen to enlarge.

To all u lucky fish who already got their N97, congrats and dont forget to update firmware if it aint the latest one as I think firmware update was available last week via NSU so hopefully u guys can do so ... so far as service providers go, they jus spit the brown stuff and most consultants dont know the difference between a Nokia 3310 and a Nokia N97 even if it hit them in the face .... and let me not start with the service, or should i say lack of it ... in South Africa, service providers take us for granted and wield their power .... so far as color of the N97, or should I say lack of choice for us South Africans go, I used to prefer white, but after reviews and feedbacks on other forums, supposedly white is not a good choice when it comes to using QWERTY keyboard, especially outdoors, as the backlight drowns out the characters on the keyboard and u are left fumbling, so as much as I would have liked white, I will actually settle for black when I get one, provided that the service providers dont decide to choose white for me!... lol

What's really strange to me is that almost all the images of the N97 you see are the white model, and yet ... we only get the black one here ??!!

Come on Nokia!

I've posted a message on "Ask Nokia", and I'm going to call the local Nokia Careline too. Will post feedback.

Feedback from Nokia Careline

Just called Nokia Careline.

The representative assured me that the White N97 would be available in South Africa through all authorized outlets. He said we can expect it within 2 weeks.

Let's see what happens.

Now the only question I have is whether Vodacom or MTN will actually be selling the White model. Seems like they can't really answer that question, so I'm thinking there has to be enough 'demand' for it.

Let's see what we can do to generate that 'demand'.
