Thanks for your feedback. So it looks like this list might actually be credible.

Interesting point on the demand. Understandable from their point of view, but how do you measure the demand? If we all go in there and say we want white and they give us that answer without actually doing anything, then the demand is not being measured.

So it looks like Nokia is the one who's choosing for us now?

As a matter of interest, did the N95, N95 8GB and N96 ever get released locally in anything other than black?

Had my N95 in sand and in the purple shades

N97

My current Vodacom Talk 500s package contract expired on 28 May and I was holding out to see what would happen with the new Vodacom packages and N97 phones. I was told emphatically on no fewer than 5 occasions, including today, that Vodacom were NOT offering Nokia N97's for upgrades but only on NEW contracts for a PAY-IN of R2 469-00 on a Talk 500s (R800-00 pm plus) package. I then told them that MTN were offering a FREE Nokia N97 on their Anytime 350 package for R489-00 pm to which they responded ... sorry, can't help ... to which I responded ... sorry, I'm porting to MTN ... just did ... and Vodacom have now lost my business.

What bout the topup 135? or does the "TOP UP" one include that?

These deals available at any vodacom shop?

Got mine this morning from MTN (NO PAY IN :D)
Its on charge at the mo ...14hrs GRRR but it looks smaller than I expected
Cant wait to play on this beast!:D

Forgot to mention this is as per their July Special on AnyTime350 @R489 pm
This is pretty much what I was paying on my N95 (procall 220) so its no real difference on cost.
...hmmmm, could not keep my hands off it.....therefore no 14hr charge!

Got mine as well yesterday, also in black, but I've come to love it (despite the colour) in the last 24 hours. I was expecting a horrible touch screen, after reading some reviews, but it's awesome, I've got no complaints. Typing an sms with the onscreen keypad (the 0-9 keys, not qwerty) is easier than with my E90. Also, since I've used an E90 for so long, the phone feels nice small and light in comparison. The GPS is amazingly fast, I was playing indoors with maps, and while I did one address search, it locked on my location. Much faster than my E90.

When I was upgrading at MTN Fourways (they got 10 units on Monday, sold the last one to me yesterday), one guy asked the lady why they don't have the new iPhone, and she said something about software problems. I had a nice chuckle by myself. Then when they finally gave me my phone, another guy asked me "Is that Nokia's answer to the iPod", so I told him an iPod can't even make phonecalls, I think Nokia wins. He stared blankly, and I told him, but it's definitely competition for the i-PHONE.

Agree....the touch screen is awesome...and I still have the protective film on it. The new phone software upgraded quickly and improved the phone 10 fold imo.....I would have liked more smoother animation when finger draging though. But Im loving this phone, GarminXT installed.....gonna give that a road trip now.

I read most of the reviews on this phone.....gees, glad I didnt take in all they said cos a lot of it was bull!

Feedback from Vodacom customer care

I've also posted a query with Vodacom customer care online, so let's see what their response will be :)

Thought I should share this:

Thank you for your e-mail communication to Vodacom.

Please be advised we have confirmed that the Nokia N97 handset is only available in black with us at Vodacom Service Provider.

Should you have any further queries, please contact us via e-mail at [email protected]

This is a nice way of saying, sorry we've already chosen for you

I'm considering my options now.

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if the n97 is running the vodafone branded version of the firmware? if it is, i rather go with Mtn because the firmware updates will never come with vodafone.

Just change the product code to a generic EURO product code. Very easy to do, then you get the firmware updates as soon as Europe does. Did that with my 5800. To this day I still think Vodafone is running on v10 firmware for the 5800, and I've already updated twice, when I first got it to v20 and recently to v21.

I read that will void my warantee? is that true?

Sent a reply e-mail to Vodacom customer care asking if it would be possible to order a White N97.

Here is their response:

Please be advised we will not be able to order an individual handset. The Procurement department decide on the handset that is launched on the network and order accordingly. Individual requests are not applicable

So I guess it's official. Vodacom will only be supplying black N97's.

Time for me to start looking around for someone who will supply it in white.

Again, this is not about the colour of the phone, but about freedom. Are we free or are we dom ?!

I dont particularly like the white for these reasons-
- the QWERTY keyboard lettering on the keys get lost in daylight (seen comparitive photos)
- the phones back has a matt finish and Im sure in my enviroment it will get dirty quickly
- I dunno, looks a little gay to me :o

Halfway down has the keyboard comparison.

More feedback from Nokia Careline

Sent another e-mail to Nokia Careline to find out about availability of the White model.

Here's what they had to say:

Kindly be informed that we are a technical support center providing our services to all Nokia customers who are facing difficulties with their Nokia mobile products. With regard to your enquiry, the reason why this colour is not scarce is that only limited N97 are available (and with only few dealers probably) for the time being, hence the original date for the full stock is the last week of August 2009, as such, you might have difficulty in getting your choice until the model is fully available in the end of August.

I'm only upgrading in October so I think it's okay for now.

What I've learned from all of this so far is that you will really have to go to a lot of trouble to get what you really want.

I hope all of this helps somebody else out there.

so true ian "u have to go thru alot of trouble to get what u really want" and sometimes u don't end up with what u want cos there so much hassles.

This is why i find the whole "are u free or are u dom" campaign ironic.
We are not free, but we must refuse to be dom ;)

After all the trouble getting the N97, I've run into another problem. Nokia haven't released a plug-in for Apple iSync for the N97. This is a big problem for me, as I add calender entries on my phone during the day, and on Apple iCal at night, and I need to keep it sync'ed up (like I did with my E90). Nokia really doesn't care for OS X users, the supplied software only supports PC. Maybe it's their revenge on Apple for bringing out the iPhone and stealing market share? Now I have to suffer!
