Nokia N97 from Vodacom

also got my n97 yesterday, updated to the new FW and it said failed to update and it was bricked lol... way to start a friday night... but I managed to search the internet and found help and solved it..

So it is common if it happens and there is lots of ways on the net to fix it....

I love the fact that it can charge ur nokia via usb connected to your pc. atlast!!

I also did this and got the same answer till I did the software update under "tools" "nokia software updater" and "update manager" in the OKI interface
Version after update is
V11.0.0.021 (dail star hash 0000 star)

MY HANDSET IS MTN

Seems the Vodacom handsets' firmware is not available yet. The latest is v10.0.012 dated 15/05/2009. The handset product code is 0585732.

What is your MTN handset product code?

To answer a call you just slide your finger on the screen from Left to right.....cant be easier than that surely. Actually it took me two days to figure that one out!:)

I dont even use the stylus.....havnt found it necessary.....even on very small links on a website, my finger clicks them no problem.

I didnt like the phone before the software update, After the Update it was pretty awesome I thought.

Its unusual... Ive used alot of phones and alot of them take a bit of getting used to, but none with the most important button on the phone... the answer/end buttons are very important... they should be tought through I think.

I dont think the stylus was necessary at all, all the icons are big enough for anyones fingers, they also very ugly and cheap looking menu and overall OSD... but that can be changed.

got my N97 from vodacom on friday :) amazing phone =D =D =D just upsetting that they haven't offered a firmware update as of yet :( but apart from that everything works well and the phone is definitely worth the money.

Do the N97 models from Vodacom have the vodafone logo on them?

Could it be that having vodafone branded firmware is a disadvantage?

Another good reason for me to switch to MTN :)

I think you looking for a reason...
Nope no branding on the outside... nothing on the inside...

I think I have enough reasons... but then that's another thread we could start :)

Contacted Vodacom regarding the firmware update, but they said I should contact Nokia as they do not provide firmware.

Don't think Nokia would release firmware for the MTN handsets and not the Vodacom handsets?

Someone in the industry that knows how this actually works - Is Nokia or Vodacom responsible for the Vodafone branded software?

I'm not sure about the firmware but you can do it on your own with Nokia PC Suite. Although I must admit, not everyone has the odd 110MB left lying around for that update. I don't get this, MTN is offering this phone for free? Can I take it to Vodacom and ask them to match it? I got offered an additional R130x24 to get this phone (that'll act as the pay in) with my current Talk 120s contract (R330pm). The way I figure, its cheaper to pay in the amount ocleroux specified than this R130pm because with the R130pm it = R3120 and the pay in is R2639. Difference of R481! Which MTN contract is this btw?

For the product codes for the N97 you may find this link interesting.

Finally got mine. Also looking for the firmware upgrade (Vodacom handset). Seems the Vodacom/Vodafone handset upgrades will continue lagging a few months behing the rest of the service providers as we have become used to (i.e N95).

Maybe if enough new Vodacom N97 owners bug Vodacom, they will get gatvol and arrange for the branded firmware update to be packaged and released...

Don't hold your breath. Tried my best but Vodacom insists it is Nokia SA we should be questioning and they say it is Vodacom....etc.

Personally can't wait for the upgrade to become available as this phone is driving me crazy.

Advice to prospective Vodacom N97 clients - give it a few months until the upgrade becomes available from them or hold out for a MTN handset. I have reverted back to my N95 out of pure frustration.

Good phone, if you can get the updated software. :(

Cant you change the product code? I did that back with my N95, changed it to the european code...and it worked like a charm. Or does it make the warranty invalid?

I might be wrong but when you do a firmware update with ur original product code, doesnt it overwrite the vodafome firmware?

Apperantly you should use a screen protector as the screen is easily scratched, any recommendations for a screen protector?
