Nokia N97 from Vodacom

I discovered yet another feature that does not work on the N97. On the N95, while the phone was connected to the car's bluetooth kit, the GPS voice nav was still giving instructions via the phone's speaker.

With the N97, there is no voice navigation. You have to switch bluetooth off or disconnect from the audio device to have the actual voice instructions enabled.

My N95 voice navigation didnt work when I connected to the car's bluetooth.... Used both nokia maps and Garmin XT...

Mine did work after one of the firmware updates (N95). It did not work originally. Would have thought Nokia would have figured out how to actually use the bluetooth audio device for voice nav by now.

Just another question - I read all the posts regarding changing the N97 product code and updating the firmware and it seems it is the only option left for us Vodacom users. Mosts posts linked to warns of "serious damage possible". What exactly is this "serious damage"? Can it fail to the extend of making the phone useless? I thought it was just software.

I am also at the point of doing the same or selling the bloody pice of cr@p..:o

I have now done 2 product code updates on the N97 and they went very smoothly.

If you look at Braamm's post regarding his product code change and upgrade, where his phone had not started....many people (even on youtube) have seen that as a huge cadenza (phone bricked) as did Braamm. It seems in most cases a catastophy is recoverable through a hard reset.

My phones are now running v12 and its very stable with the odd lockup maybe once or twice a month. GPS seems to be on the ball again, dunno why as it was not detailed in the changelog. Still my only real problem is physical, the scratched camera lens.

I reckon the frustration of earlier versions makes it worth the "risk" doing the product code change. After all, I want a phone that works.

guys, before the camera lens REALLY gets scratched up, try this -->

Cheers
Don

Too late for me Im afraid.....my camera lens is "game over" for low light flash shots.

Does anyone know of a parts supplier here on SA for the lens section? I have this overseas supplier

...but seems they are out of stock. Im hoping the the reason for this is because a new design is being made and that we will be able to get "new design" replacements before long.

The update to V12 is worth it, exept for the lens cover scratch issue, I now love my phone! It does exactly what I wanted it to do!

Havnt had a hang or backlight issue yet!

Posted this in the other topic too but just got home and did this...

I got my phone on Saturday with version 10 installed from Vodacom.

Just installed all the goodies on the Pc ( OVI etc )
Tried to to a software update and BAM, picked up version 12 and updated it. Took around 10 minutes to complete with the 149.2mb download and everything.
