Huh...cant be!!

I'm serious... it keeps showing a white screen for a second, then switches off... then 5seconds later... same thing.. over and over and over.... :-(

Seriously sucks, all because Vodacom SUCKS BALLS!

Hey guys. I have bricked my phone twice, just follow the following instructions: http://www.nokiausers.net/forum/nokia-n97/28458-anyone-has-bricked-your-n97-there-hope-you.html

Just read everything and do what post number 4 says, download all the apps they say. It works even if you dont see the nokia sign coming on and just a white screen.

I believe the issue is with doing an upgrade on a PC with Vista or Windows 7. So best to try upgrade and the brick fix on a windows XP machine.....

PS: where it says in the navifirm to download 11.0.21, select the latest firmware to download. Will save time and MB for upgrading later again...

And where it says to turn on ur phone when prompted, play around with this option a bit, it wont work at first, so its best to try and try until u get to switch the phone on at just the right time. (ull get frustrated and think it wont work, but be patient and keep on trying. I even tried to anticipate to switch it on when im suppose to click "Okay". so play around a bit)

This is becoming absolutely ridiculous. We are not all tech savvy – why should we battle this much to get such a high end and expensive handset to do what it is supposed to do. People are flashing and “de-branding” and “bricking” phones just to make due.

I have e-mailed Vodacom Customer services for probably the 10th time in the past two weeks today – every time the response is the same: “Vodacom does not release untested software...” What makes Vodacom so special to hold back firmware that the whole world has been using for almost 2 months? I think the testing story is BS. They probably just haven’t gotten around to adding their “Yebo Goggo” screens to the new firmware and therefore haven’t released it. If Nokia approved the software 2 months ago, what is Vodacom actually testing that takes this long?

This is not my toy or my latest gadget. This a business tool that I use every day to stay in contact with clients, do business with and use to help me navigate my way around. Vodacom’s no-care attitude and absolute ignorance regarding this N97 problem convinced me once and for all – they could care less about contract subscribers as they know they will be receiving our subscription money end of the month.

I could have saved myself thousands and have gone for a much cheaper phone with basic e-mail and calendar features and would have been much happier. Prospective N97 owners beware – stay away from Vodacom handsets.

One pi$$ed off Vodacom N97 owner.

I will wait for N900...

If I could roll back time a few weeks I would rather get this - http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_e75-2688.php

Now there is one great Nokia phone! Been trying to swop some colleagues, but bo luck... :D

The N900 gives me the same "vibe" as the N97 - all these promises and youtube vids and new (unproven) tech... ouch.

Don't fall for the hype again. Maybe in a perfect world in 22 and a 1/2 months time when my Talk500 is due for an upgrade we will have the "N107" that manages to actually deliver what we all dreamt about in 2009...

I agree...seems to be the trend on the forums. Mine was done with my XP machines. I had not installed OVI suite on the WINDOWS 7 machine yet.

Dont even bother with OVI suite yet, it looks nice and all, but does not have all the functionality that pc suite has at the moment....

I have pc suite installed on windows 7 but wont dare doing firmware updates on there lol

Well, I have successfully changed the product code to allow firmware updates, am on MTN 350...
Also I am on Windows 7, have installed Ovi Suite, had minor issue in the start, sorted that out by changing the number of port in the configuration file...
So far, DAMN so happy with v12, and as I said in another thread, CANT WAIT FOR V20 :)
Cheers
Don

OK, some feedback.

After spending the whole morning trying to get the firmware flashed etc all I had to do was "Hard Reset" the device.

My phone is back!!! PHEW!

Running V12.0.024.... :-)

So, running tests now to ensure V12 is working properly and compatible with Voda"****ty"com network....

Will post results and how to steps for those brave enough to follow.... :-)

Regarding the firmware update, I called Nokia Store in Midrand and they said they can do it.

Anyone had any experience with them?

btw. the people weren't exactly friendly.

I discovered yet another feature that does not work on the N97. On the N95, while the phone was connected to the car's bluetooth kit, the GPS voice nav was still giving instructions via the phone's speaker.

With the N97, there is no voice navigation. You have to switch bluetooth off or disconnect from the audio device to have the actual voice instructions enabled.
