Eskom load shedding boost 3G laptop sales

Yeah. Thanks to my Laptop, Nintendo DS and PSP I'm not too phased about the shedding :) Oh and the generator also doesn't hurt... :)
 
This does not bode well for hardcore online poker players!!!

Perhaps a UPS for the router is in order...
 
Would a notebook with an USB ADSL modem do the trick keeping thing's connected on the ground??? (or howbout a notebook with an integrated ADSL modem - which I know does not exist at present)
 
all you do to power your router with a ups is cut off an extension cable and make it into a kettle plug and boom :)

although a usb adsl modem is better in this case
 
I bought a laptop because of the load shedding. Can't afford the 3G card though so will probably use dialup when the power goes out. Lol! Going backwards here...

ADSL router on a UPS (600kva), will last just about 2 hours. Thats what I do.

Disclaimer: Do at own risk.

Buy a multiplug adapter with three prong and two prong sockets ("double adapter type thingy").

Cut off the 3 prong plug.
Take a monitor power lead.
Chop it in half.
Attach the one half (the half that goes to the UPS output) to the mutiplug.

Wala!

Works a bomb.

I power my cordless phone, PDA, ADSL router, cell phone charger etc from one UPS.

Its 2 hours - been through that a few times.

I reckon its because the UPS I have is small, and going from battery to 240V, and then to a transformer and back to 12V DC is inefficient.
There is a thread somewhere that shows a more complex, but very much more efficient way to do it.

I believe forumite "ambo" posted - should help with a search.

Ok wanted to get a 650VA to run a cordless phone and ADSL router for a few hours, might have to get something bigger then seeing as Eskom load sheddings are often longer than 2 hours. Thanks.

probably cheaper to get two then.
I paid R300 or so a year ago for mine.
The 1Kvas were R1000 at the time.
Another option - depending on your house layout (it would work for me if I had to, car is 10m from my desk), is to get one of those car adapters - plug into a cig.lighter and give out 50W or 100W. "Should" be plenty for DSL router.

I am thinking of that for laptop - camping shops sell them normally.
