Vodacom starting to ‘roll out’ The Grid

Why would I want to use it? What does it offer more than say MXiT, G-Talk or any other Jabber server out there? Can't see the use for another IM service. If I wanted people to know where I am, I would tell them, if they made the effort to call.

How do I get it?

how do I get it?

The official site is at www.thegrid.co.za
The blog is here: blog.thegrid.co.za

To get The GRID without going online simply sms "GRID" to 33313
Then follow the link sent via sms.

Currently only the WAP version is available. There is a cool JAVA version coming soon.

Hope this helps.

Did you read the article? The point is social networking and locating...not IMing.

so now i know where the person is that i am chatting to? and whats the point of that? and who else can see where i am? and or pinpoint your location if you have a gps built in?

Sounds like a glorified Tracker system ja.....:D

Cant anyone see the risks? Are you people WOWED by the cool factor and impulsive!

[Scenario1 ] Where is Frikkie? - aha, he's at the butchery in Sandton, <villain> then goes to frikkies house and waits/or rips his house off.

[Scenario 2] Where is Thombe driving the SBV truck.

Its so easy to plan criminal activities when they know where all the people are.
Criminal syndicates dont even have to make a phone call to know where their co-conspirators are! And dont give me the BS that its 'Secure' - Facebook has been breached several times already. Any vodacom employee of low standards and R1000 will get you any info.

...with the marketing campaign kicking off at the University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg

and University of Stellenbosch...

Well, It is 'Secure'. :D

Why don't you try The Grid/Meep out for yourself before making these wild accusations?

Yes I did. I also went to the website and looked at the screenshots. Looked like a IM client with added features. Except for seeing where your buddy is, it doesn't really offer anything else, from what I could see.

How are you going to do more social networking, than what you can do already using MXiT or any other IM client?

I tried "TheGrid" when it first beta'ed last year.

It was more like "TheMemoryLeak" and "TheBatteryEater".

At least it sucked a little less than MTN's messaging attempt.

I am not accusing of anything. I am merely pointing that people are all attracted to the 'shiny' things, no matter what the consequences are. Same as 'Secure' cell phone banking - thats a myth now. With the Interception laws that ARE in effect, SARS (Tax man) can find you (he has all your mobile details, as you are required to give them WITH your ID number)

That is ONE example of its use. For every 1 use, there are 10 Abuses. How about if the cell phone company sells your 'movement history' to marketing people? THAT IS the next step! - Do you want your phone to turn in to a billboard? Dont confuse Innovation with 'Invasive'

You cant see the wood for the trees.

Ah yes... well developed:
