The WiMax conundrum

Why isn't this situation surprising? Oh yeah. Because it happens EVERY fscking time.

Telkom and the Govt (Sentech) monopolizing another corner of the market in order to maximize profits in established markets... no surprise there! And that neutered regulator ICASA doing squat to expedite de-regulation... Industry Regulators should be elected by all interested and concerned parties and have representation among the public as well. This is the only way to ensure fairness and obligatory abiding by the standards. Come on Mbeki... please bring this country into the Twenty-First Century already!!!

I can only support the 'use-it-or-lose-it' idea rpm is putting forward.

Spectrum is not an unlimited resource and preference should be given to those not only willing to actually use it, but especially to those with a proven track record that they can turn it into something of benefit to the country.

rpm, have you ever considered building a relevant measurement on this, something like (SA advantage measured in some way)/spectrum allocated?

I can only support the 'use-it-or-lose-it' idea rpm is putting forward.

Take away telkom's and sentech's, give it to people who are keen on using it.

Some industry feedback even suggests that companies should not expect WiMax spectrum before 2010.

You mean it'll take ICASA 2 years to decide on spectrum usage? it shouldnt take more than 3 months...

The current problem is that companies like Sentech, Neotel and Telkom are arguably not making the most of their allocated WiMax spectrum, and many industry players are calling for a ‘use it or lose it’ policy.

Sentech lol. Are Neotel actually using their spectrum. Everything I read about them mentions their CDMA plans. When will they use WiMax?

I definitely agree Sentech need to lose it, and personally Telscum do as well, for their Air-Rental hogwash (I know its not called that, but thats what it boils down to really)

It seems we have very little spectrum, so I also support the 'use-it-or-lose-it' idea rpm is putting forward.

When digital migration is finally completed, what will the additional spectrum be used for? future wireless technologies?
