Hi all,

I have been looking around at the various VOIP services and it seems that the most critically acclaimed of the lot are skype and jajah.

The skypeout call rates in comparison to the jajah rates appear to be much cheaper.

Then also, skype pro seems to be quite good too.

What would you guys recommend? Also not sure about this?

Cheers,
David

Skype and Jajah both have much higher than normal rates. People stick with these because they work easily.

I use Voipraider with an adapter for my phone, so that it just works, no software or computer necessary.

Thanks for the reference carudden. I've just registered an account and have successfully sent a couple of free sms's!! Just trying to figure out how to get the phone-to-phone service to work.

Any tips in the time being? Where did you get the adapter for your phone? Is it a physical adapter or piece of software?

Just figured out the problem. I spotted this at the bottom of the sms rates page:

"Voipraider reserves the right after a certain amount of SMS to start charging sms for the default rate.
FREE SMS is available for users with Freedays."

The same applies to calls: "Voipraider reserves the right after a certain amount of calls to start charging the default rate. FREE CALLS are available for users with Freedays."

Here is a comparison of the latest Betamax rates (Voipraider, 12Voip, Poivy, etc.)
http://www.backsla.sh/betamax

You need to choose the most appropriate service depending on the destination, call frequency etc. The Voipraider and 12Voip services offer free calls to SA destinations for 90 days for 10 Euro but only if you use the free Voipraider soft phone i.e. I don't think that the calls will still be free if you use an ATA (analogue telephone adapter) etc. See here - http://voipguides.blogspot.com/2007/10/voipraider-offers-free-calls-to-south.html

Other services like Voipstunt (www.voipstunt.com) give 120 free days but do not include SA as a free destination (i.e. calls *to* SA numbers are not free). Voipbusterpro(www.voipbusterpro.com) gives 365 free days but charges a call connection fee of 3.9 Euro cents per call and only provide 5 Euros worth of credit for a 10 Euro fee. www.nonoh.net offers very cheap rates to SA cell phones (6 Euro cents per minute) and does not charge any phone to phone connection fee like most of the other companies. You need to choose the most appropriate service depending on the destination, frequency, whether or not you plan to use an ATA etc. If you want to call SA numbers from your PC, Voipraider and 12Voip will probably be your best choices although the quality of SA to SA calls may not be optimal as I think all calls are routed through Europe. Just remember that the free destinations can change at any time particularly in the case of Voipraider and 12Voip and SA may not be a free country indefinitely.

www.adphone.com and www.voixio.com (launching on 1st April) also offer truly free international calls.

Hmmm. :D

Besides Betamax companies, what are the recommendations? (standard SIP, using ATA) It's just that Betamax seem to have loads of terms, and rules. It all makes it very confusing and erratic when trying to work out call costs.
