Couples marrying now face a 45 per cent risk of divorce, official figures reveal.

The threat hits a peak in the fourth year, and almost one in eight marriages is over before the fifth anniversary.

The latest figures show a newly-married couple have a 45 per cent chance of divorce, a 45 per cent chance of being separated by death before their 60th anniversary, and a 10 per cent chance of the marriage going on longer than 60 years.

It also said that those who marry more than once are more likely to undergo divorce in later marriages.

What's the sense in marriage if we are doomed to fail? I don't know how married folks do it, but after so many years it's amazing that they don't get bored.

A dog is truly a man's best friend.
If you don't believe it, just try this experiment.
Put your dog and your wife in the trunk of the car for an hour.
When you open the trunk, who is really happy to see you!
:D

I'm supposed to get married the end of this year, think it's time to make a run for it....

As a man, its not going to be easy for a girl to convince me marriage is a good idea.. What on Earth could I possibly gain? Unless she is rich ofcourse :rolleyes:

A shared commitment with your chosen partner for life maybe??
A single surname for your kids (amongst other good stuff..)
A freakin amazing celebration of your love for one another shared with your friends and family... feel free to stop me at any stage here... :o

STARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRP :D

I think it's a bit defeatist to assume that your marriage is doomed to failure because of other people inability to keep it together.

That's an odd statement. Getting bored does not have to do with MARRIAGE, but being with the same person for a long time, even if you are not married.

One of the good reasons for marriage is monogamy .... less chance of getting HIV/AIDS.

Even less chance if you skip marriage and use a condom . . . . and condom doesnt want 50% of your assets when it's all over.

Who initiates divorce?
The National Center for Health Statistics reports that from 1975 to 1988 in the US, in families with children present, wives file for divorce in approximately two-thirds of cases. In 1975, 71.4% of the cases were filed by women, and in 1988, 65% were filed by women.[11]

According to a study published in the American Law and Economics Review, women currently file slightly more than two-thirds of divorce cases in the US.[12] There is some variation among states, and the numbers have also varied over time, with about 60% of filings by women in most of the 19th century, and over 70% by women in some states just after no-fault divorce was introduced, according to the paper. Evidence is given that among college-educated couples, the percentages of divorces initiated by women is approximately 90%.

In their study titled "Child Custody Policies and Divorce Rates in the US," Kuhn and Guidubaldi find it reasonable to conclude that women anticipate advantages to being single, rather than remaining married.[13]

When women anticipate a clear gender bias the courts regarding custody, they expect to be the primary residential parent for the children and the resulting financial child support, maintaining the marital residence, receiving half of all marital property, and gaining total freedom to establish new social relationships. In their detailed analysis of divorce rates, Kuhn and Guidubaldi conclude that acceptance of joint physical custody may reduce divorce. States whose family law policies, statutes, or judicial practice encourage joint custody have shown a greater decline in their divorce rates than those that favor sole custody.

Will condom be your soft place to fall after a hard day at work? Will condom stand by your side through the difficult parts of life? Will condom visit you in hospital when you're ill?

I think not, my friend!

At the moment I have a better chance of a condom doing that than a girl-friend in my life:D. Seriously I think people get married wayyyy to quickly, they hardly even know each other!

Marriage in today's world is unpractical, simply because it doesn't work. There's too much pressure from all sides (work, family, kids etc.) to make it worthwhile. This was not the case years back, but it's certainly not worthwhile getting married in todays world.

Condom can fit in pocket, can be taken anywhere, and likes multiple partners... :D

I actually agree with the 45% statistic. I know many couples who got married with way to many unresolved issues, but in the 5 months before marriage those issues were overclouded with the whole hype/rush of the wedding ceremony & the organizing that goes with that. And "the ceremony cost a fortune , there is now way we can back out of it now".

IMO too many couples get married just for the sake of getting hitched. Another problem is the pressure to get married, especially from 'more conservative' parents/friends/family, who think that if you are in a relationship for longer than 2 years you should get married; heaven forbid you should want to move in together!

If you're a man get a contract killer, not a lawyer.
