Hi folks

I can now confirm that a meeting with Telkom is scheduled for Tuesday.

Please post any concerns and compliments that you feel should be relayed to Telkom management against this thread. Please try to voice both positives and negatives. This will give a clear view on where Telkom succeeds and fails.

I will do my best to accurately represent you guys at the meeting and I can give you the guarantee that whatever you feel will be voiced.

Regards,

RPM

In my opinion we should first determine what our non-negotiable demands are.

But we must also take care not to try to chomp off too much.

What are the non-negotiables?

We must go to Telkom with specifics...no general ideas like "port prioritisation" or "capping". We must be specific as to the changes we want to see. What exactly do we want regarding port prioritisation, capping etc ? Specifics may get us somewhere.

And also, one thing I learned in my short and uneventful life: give them something on black and white to take home with them [^]

Now we need guys like ckleynhans to come up with detailed solutions...

If necessary, we must hold some polls on the site to determine our own priorities.

In no order : Negatives

- Telkom must either enhance the 'throttled' international bandwidth so it is usable or else cut it completely. To assure nervous customers that Telkom will not cut off the international access after exceeding your 3 gigs and then offer this 'connection' that we have is a sham, legally correct but practically useless.

- The port prioritisation must include subscriber input into which ports deserve prioritisation - omiting your subscriber base and making generalisations on port preferences is ludicrous.

- The network appears to be overloaded during business hours - Telkom must enhance the network or stop introducing new subscribers till a amicable solution is attained.

- Determining the cap limit without any transparent consultation with the users is not service oriented - a poll should be considered to determine what the users consider a viable cap - Additional gigs should be available to be purchased at a reasonable price per gig and not merely another account.

Positives :

- The local speed is good.

- The quick login is great.

- The fact Telkom is prepared to sit and discuss is good

- err...

Thats my lot .

More importantly RPM must ensure there is some paper behind any concessions Telkom makes.

We haven't got time to make polls ect, let evetyone post a list of what they consider pros and cons with ADSL and suggestions if any to improve service.

Yes, exactly, they must put it in writing.

Ok,really happy to see this is happening...so it shows that they do care about their customers feelings or maybe trying to save face!!!
Anyway,my suggestion
Lets say they do not budge on the port prioritisation for the sake of the business users how about a compromise that says after 17:00 or 18:00 when most businesses close and over weekends why not give the priority to gaming;chatting and P2P(seeing that not only MP3 downloads occur their...mostly yes but also software and document downloads). Then by 06:00 the prioritisation can kick back into place.
because why should others who are paying the same as me get better service than me all the time even available to them when they are not using it.

I mean fair is fair..or am i really being unrealistic in this expectation???

ADSL--A Damn Slow Link

Well I am not a adsl subscriber at the moment but would really like to see a slower service offered on adsl, like a different package where you get 64k or 128k connection speeds and you have better international pings. No port prioritization on this is VERY essential. And the cost should be lower aswell. I don't care about the cap really, just as long as it is cheap and useable.
I would like to see such a product go in the range of R400 p/m line rental. Which isn't that expensive is it ?

Hi,

1) I don't think the cap should be one of our concerns. Telkom is busy with new products for gamers, business users, etc. and are already aware of this. We are aware of this, and are prepared to wait until they release their new products. Maybe you can get dates to put your subscriber base at ease?

2) For the past 1-2 or so months, I have not been able to attend any of my online courses (the training program uses port 7776), and I've still got many more months of nightly classes. The program (Interwise) cant even download the material for the talk let alone hear the guy speaking on the other side. I NEED this training in order to further my own education to provide better services to my clients.

3) I think all prioritization should be removed. If someone constantly downloads using their P2P application(s), they can only download for about 22 hours, and then their cap is reached, hence no more problems from that user using bandwidth.

4) If bandwidth is a problem, they should halt their sales until they sort it out, but how could we even begin to approach this with them. Easy to say, but impossible to ask of them.

I'm sure I've missed quite a few, but that's my biggest gripe at the moment.

Hi

Id just like 2 say telkom should cancel port prioritisation because I can use my whole 3gb cap up in 3weeks or i can use it up in 2days using a p2p program it makes no difference. If im capped i cant dl from p2p programs

Costs of ADSL to be brought down to match the current service they provide, or bring up their ADSL to the price they are currently charging.

thanks rpm.

Ask telkom how they can provide 128 ISDN dailup to their customer without any restrictions i.e. (Capping, Port Restrictions etc)

My opinion is if the cap remains and is exceeded, an equivalent speed to ISDN (128K) to should provided.

Secondly, Telkom should allow users to use the 128K connection before they reach the cap. The reason for this if you do not require speed for certain task which wont affect your cap. When you want a faster connection you can just swap over to the 1 which has a cap. (similar to the cellular networks when u swap from per sec to per min) Hope u guyz understand what im getting at.

For me, paying less for this poor service is not an option. I am trying to run a business, and I need the service they promoted, nothing more is 'needed'.

Paying R300 for the same service will still have me fuming because it's not what was sold to me.

The service should be cheaper, especially on Telkom's side. I don't understand why Telkom is worried about the bandwith, isn't that the ISP's job? Don't the ISP's have their own bandwith already?

Cheaper internet costs will fuel the economy, it's a fact. They are killing the small businesses and entrepreneur that want to make a living.

Give us more options, 128kb, 256kb and 512kb. Don't give us 512kb when it's actually half that. I know adsl is a cash cow for Telkom but by making it cheaper and more accesable they can more than double their user base.

I have 3 concerns / suggestions which telkom should attend to, much in line with all the others already listed:

1) after reaching the cap, the throttled service should be "usable", i.e. should be at least the same as a good dial-up connection

2) Telkom should look into providing different levels of ADSL service, i.e. 64/32 or 128/64 or 256/128 at lower than the current costs - different users have different needs - the lower two should carry no cap or a much higher cap than 3Gig. For many users the 24/7 connection at a flat monthly rate is the issue and not so much the high speeds.

3) This is just an idea - but technically possible I would think. Why not allow the user to toggle between the full ADSL service and the throttled service( provided this is at an acceptable level). At different times the same user have different needs and in having this option available could easier manage volume downloads where higher speeds are preferable.

I think I share all the concerns that other poster have raised/will raise about the service.

The only other problem I have which is absolutely essential to me is the terrible quality of my UUNet VPN connection over ADSL. I would dearly love to know where the problem lies - it is with my ISP (Mweb), Telkom, UUNet or with my Netgear DG814??

At this stage no one can tell me. All I know is that the connection performs as badly on any one of 3 machines running W2k or XP. Also, the connection is ONLY used for secure connection to our hosted servers, nothing else....

The VPN is essential to our business, yet over ADSL it is about as useful as a wet cigarette.

So my question would be has Telkom (and their 'shaping') got anything to do with my poor VPN connection?

Good luck with the meeting.

Introducing ADSL to South Africa was a step in the right direction. Being an American living in South Africa and having been used to fast internet speeds for many years, I am happy to use a service in the third world that attempts to meet first world standards. I am however unhappy with the service recieved after the three gig cap.
"Patches" for many of the games being sold in South Africa are only available on overseas servers. A "Patch" can be anywhere from 1 MB up to 100MB's or more, and if you are a enthusiastic gamer you may have many games to be patched once or twice a month. Also "Microsoft" seems not to have set up a local server with automatic updates available for end-user operating system's. This means that if you need to have an update for your operating system and have hit the three gig cap than you must wait until the following month to update or leave the PC running for many hours trying to open the update page. The three gig cap has a purpose but there needs to be better service once the cap is hit. And so what if local speeds remain the same after the cap, most of the usefull sites are not in South Africa. So basically when I hit my cap I am unable to surf the net either. Telkom intended to stop abuse of downloading and uploading, but also at the same time stopped the user from surfing the internet. This doesn't make sense to me...[B)]

Negatives : -International gaming is the pits and you've got to wait will bout 12pm before you can play.

- The Cap is of course a pain but it's mainly the international speed which is irrataing.

Positives : - 24-7 connection
- DL speed quite fast
- Local is reasonably quick

I agree with all previous issues.
For myself i highlight only these:
* The 24/7 connection at a flat rate is important.
* The 3 Gig cap is ok but the line must be at least equal to 64
isdn after that. The line should not be worthless for
international connection after that.
* And how about swapping between the line that is capped and the
other one. This will also make it easier for telkom to handle.
* I would even be satisfied with slower adsl without a cap.

Good luck at Telkom guys. I hope they are reasonable.
