rpm Well done man! You have made such an amazing effort in attempting to shape SA's bandwidth...

Im not sure if you will include my idea but if Telkom were to make a 128k or 256k 24/7 connection with a reasonable cap it would please everyone wouldn't it, would for me, id be happy as a pig in s**t with 256k 24/7, *dreams*... Or you can battle it out for 512k :P

This reply was a waste of time i know and i have no more to say as i am not an adsl user and cannot put forward my thoughts toward the service...
 
1) The cap is too low by ANY standards. 3Gb can be far exceeded even at a rate of 33.6kbps. A services that is "512" should have a cap that can give at least 50% usage per day.

2) If the cap is on international traffic (as international traffic is all that is affected after being "caped") then ONLY international traffic should be added to your bandwidth usage. Using up 3gb of local traffic should not mean you can no longer surf international sites.

3) The cap should be fair, their accounting systems should be fully functional or not in place at all. Some people are able to evade the cap as Telkom "forgot to cap them". It should be dropped, or implemented fairly on everyone according to points 1 and 2.

4) Port prioritization should not be used as this limits proprietary technology that Telkom has overlooked in whatever research they have or have not decided to undertake.

I completely agree with madala that ADSL is a last mile access technology and shouldn't be capped by the Telco. My understanding is that from the DSLAM, data is routed via the Telkom ATM network to a Telkom BRAS. The various ISPs connect to the BRAS. So if I'm using MWeb as my ADSL ISP, my traffic is routed from the BRAS onto UUNet and over their international bandwidth. It has nothing to do with Telkom and is the prerogative of the ISP to have caps and port prioritisation.

I'm also not too sure about the oft-touted costs of international bandwidth from SA. Does anyone know the economics of the SAT3 cable? How much was the capital outlay, what is the typical period that Telcos budget for break-even, what is the probable interest rate on the loan, what is the annual maintenance cost of the cable etc? We only know it has a 120Gb capacity. I have a sneaky feeling that Telkom is seriously overcharging (a few hundred percent or more) the market for international connectivity because they can. Please save us Sentech!

Well i couldnt sleep last night so i started wondering is it because telkom might be losing shares which i think they wont lose that much shares cos they dont really get that much bad publicy cos most ppl dont read itwed which gives the most coverage

can it be that telkom really cares about there customers? which i seriously doubt

or maybe because of the new sno if it starts with broadband internet and one person signs up with them and posts on this forum or any other local forum (sgs forum, prophecy or any other) that the new sno's internet ownz there will be more ppl signing up with them and if telkom have got about 10 000adsl users and mostly 70% of there adsl customers are online gamers then telkom would lose a lot of customers or even if the new sno's adsl are a lot cheaper more ppl will go with the new sno and telkom will lose a lot of shares and money which if they dont start acting now they know they are gonne lose a lot of customers

just my 2cents worth mentioning [:D]
 
Doesn't it make sence to have profiles for daytime users and afterwork users?

Gaming, kazaa etc after hours and normal traffic for daytime users like stock trading, online studies, banking etc.

Thanks for all the great feedback and ideas. I have included most of this in my preparation for the Telkom meeting. I will do my best to get all of these across to Telkom and come back with some positive news.

The only problem with daytime and nighttime profiles is that buisness
doesnt stick to SA time ,the States is 8 hours behind and Japan is 8 hours infront of us ,so thats bit of a cock up with that idea[:)]
 
Im hoping RPM can get throught to TELKOM. It seems promising because they willing to discuss the matter.

I got a good feeling that some compromise will be made. Lets wait and see!
 
Hey man.

The results of this uneventful meeting has been posted elsewhere. Just check it out. Telkom told us to shove it and called us a minority. Just wait till they get competition. They won't have any customers left.

I have got another idea! To make movies more affordable how about if they gouge out one of your eyes and only charge you half price for the ticket? Cars to expensive? Get a BIG angle grinder and sell pieces of the car for much cheaper!

What justification is there for making lower speed packages cheaper? How about just making the full speed packages more affordable? Remember bandwidth is not a physcial commodity that gets used up... Yes its finite. Yes we need reasonable caps (10x what they are now for a start). Just like in the rest of the world.
 
Negatives:
The service should be cheaper! I don't feel a slower option is viable, because during the ICASA hearing that very topic came up! Broadband must conform to certain minimums to be considered braodband.

They should should actually do something about infrastructre - they're losing business (see my forum post http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=25703 )
I cannot see why they can only schedule project way into a new financial year.

Local capping is simply vindictive.

The whole selling point of ADSL was that it was a s set rate per month. I don't think the pay per use is particularly a good option. People who are using less than their monthly quota do so of their own choice.

Cost MUST come down further. The service needs to be within the reach of the majority and not the minority.

SLA's. We need these. Telkom must be held to some level of service. The current best-effort could be that there's little or no effort. There must be certain minimums that Telkom should agree to honour.

Poor communication for ADSL customer support office. (In my case regarding the relocation of my adsl service, which isn't going to happen anymore. Again - see my post above)

Positives:
Telkom will not penalise me for exiting my contract early because they cannot provide the service. While this was not the desired result - it's fair. This says to me they're willing to be reasonable on certain topics.

Generally I've found my connection to be good.mostof the time within the expected kind of speed for uploads and downloads during the evenings. Sometimes even faster than expected. Not during office hours though.
 
Telkom should be asked to confirm the pricing structure as it is "rumoured" to be from 1 November 2005. Hard capping is OUT - local should not be capped.

Something which was available in the past but no more, is that once capped, one should be able to update virus pattern file etc - this is in Telkom's own interest
 
LOL @ lewstherin....was wondering the same thing, then I started reading some of the 2003 posts, and had an even bigger :D on my face.

Some of the points up for discussion is still being discussed..at ICASA level as well
 
yah so i was chating to some people in the states.. they getting a 4MB for $35x6.5 =~ R227 for a 8MB/648k.A 192k/64k + 3 GB(R470/6.5=$72)...
I can't wait to finish studying and live overseas a bit till this come right or icasa starts pumping iron :D
 
It might be a smaller point, but please mention with their new pricing people like me, living on a small pension and Internet is my whole world, ADSL will become unaffordable.
