Samsung unveils 256 GB SSD

I wish it would hurry up and replace it in ALL computers! I said this before in another thread about this: To me this will be one of the most important advances in computing.

I have had terrible luck with conventional HDD in the past. I also use 2 handheld Psion Workabout computers and they have solid state drives. To me getting away from the whole concept of moving parts in a hard drive will be a huge advance.

I agree, we should also move away from CD/DVD's and advance to using flash disks.

this is good news, but at what price?!

I think by 2012 it will be more like 70% of laptops will be using these kind of drives. It just makes a whole lot more sense in a mobile computer.

or even 100%

I cant see why we would use old type drives any more.. the only factor being cost.

I want this now !!! Would turn the Laptop market upside down..

Uses less power, its faster, much cooler (temp) and its silent !... methinks a lot of old laptops will come to life with something like this !!!

well it will probably cost about R10000 so I don't see it becoming mainstream any time this year or next year... around 2011 it will of most likely dropped to the price of normal hard drives

Prices will plummet since this is the new *in* thing and everyone and his dog wants one.

It'll take a while for these to replace the TB drives though. I suspect these are more useful to boost the OS. e.g. Two or more small-ish SSDs in RAID as the OS partition.

Would be so awesome if it didn't cost R84000 for a 256GB 3.5" SSD.

Why this is the most important advances to you?
Well no moving parts ie Head, platters - all solid state memory chips, speed

The new Samsung 256GB SSD is also the thinnest drive with the largest capacity to be offered with a SATA II interface.
Performance data of the new Samsung 256GB SSD features a sequential read speed of 200 megabytes per second (MB/s) and sequential write speed of 160MB/s.
The Samsung MLC-based 2.5-inch 256GB SSD is about 2.4 times faster than a typical HDD. Furthermore, the new 256 GB SSD is only 9.5 millimeters (mm) thick, and measures 100.3x69.85 mm.

Samsung’s new MLC 256GB SSD, besides being comparable in speed to an SLC-based SSD, also boasts reliability equal to that of SLC SSDs, with a mean time between failures (MTBF) of one million hours, while costing considerably less. Power consumption is also exceptionally low at 0.9 watts in active mode.

U can get an 8GB flash drive for R300, so prices should be a bit lower soon me thinks.

I hope so. Only thing is, SSD's have only been on the market for around 3 months now. So until there is a demand for it and people buy it we won't see a drop as fast as we would like.

Well this is the way to go. Not for desktops at the moment, but small devices that require low power consumption and robustness will definitely benefit. I suppose in 10 years time it will be commonplace to have dvd's on your cellphone, and you're not going to haul around a 5.25" drive around with you.
