Vodacom reaches 34 Million subscribers

/me anxiously awaits the day when the number of "subscribers" is greater than the population of said company's "territory".

Haha so true. So according to Vodacom: MTN and CellC share the other 15m people in SA? Assuming every person in SA owns a cellphone...

Vodacom CEO previously said that mobile providers work on around 1.2 SIMS per person - hence a 100%+ penetration rate is not unlikely in SA. It is already the case in some countries in Europe I think...

Surely in that case the amount quoted should be "subscriptions" and not "customers"?

How many inactive/stolen and discarded prepaid sim cards are there in that figure?

Yep, every time I buy a new phone I am forced to buy another effing sim card and activate in the store. I get out the shop and first thing I do is throw it in the bin, I don't even bother using up that airtime.

Not many, The FICA law made sure of that.

Yeah, but i know quite a few people who have prepaid sim cards gathering dust in a draw somewhere either because they've moved on to a contract or just simply wanted to change numbers

When I look at that profit I can't but help feeling sick in my stomach. Every company deserves to earn a fair return on their investment, in fact that is important because it encourage more companies to invest and creat jobs etc. Vodacom has a great network, have invested billions and work hard but when I look at that profit I can't help but want my money back. It feels like my wallet has been raped...

@vodacom3g: Tell me this please. Vodacom doesn't seem to want my freakin business.

I have reached the end of my 24 month contract so I phone the Upgrade center number and tell the consultant that I want the N82, but MTN offers it at R309 per month with zero pay-in for the phone at start of contract. Vodacom offers it at R800 per month and with R1500 pay-in at start.

She tells me the N82 is not on special at present, but if I just wait till 6 June, perhaps then it might be. Now why in the hell should I wait until then and be charged another months subscription (currently on weekender package) when I can just convert to prepaid now and then upgrade when or if Vodacom has a decent offer resembling MTN's?

So I tell her I want to convert to prepaid in the meanwhile and she tells me that I won't be able to upgrade to a contract for 6 months if I do that. I tell her that's ridiculous and stupid and that Vodacom is chasing away their customers by penalising customers for wanting to stick with them? She said that's Vodacom's policy and I told her to tell her managers that's a stupid policy.

I think this is just typical of Vodacom banking on the fact that they can hold the customer's number as ransom to stop them defecting.

Fact is, in my case, I have an MTN contract which I can upgrade to get that N82 I have my eye on. I've had that number for 4 years, so no big deal to change back to that as my primary number. I'm sure however that many others feel they have no choice and have to stay chained to Vodacom.
