Police Chopper shot down in Soweto

Technically I'd suggest that shot down is both correct and incorrect..

The pilots lost control after being shot at and then hit the power lines...

Was not shot down - they hit a power line.
The article is a bit vague on whether they hit the power lines while going down or whether the got scarred and cruised into the lines.

Another 1st for South Africans.

I wonder, mercurial likes to post these random stories (however weird) from other countries.

I bet there is someone on a foreign forum posting OUR stories and THOSE people are wondering how WEIRD / STUPID we are!

Meh time for the cops to shoot to kill and forget about even trying to arrest these fekkers. Someone picks up a gun to commit a crime; forfeits their rights in my opinion.

I highly doubt this only happens in SA.
Not to undermine the seriousness of this, but it is not unique.

Police helicopter crashes in Soweto shoot-out
July 04, 2008, 11:15

Three police officers have been seriously injured after their helicopter crashed in Meadowlands, Soweto this morning, said Gauteng police.

It apparently hit power cables while helping the Florida and Roodepoort Dog Units chase armed robbery suspects, Superintendent Eugene Opperman said.

Police began pursuing the robbers on foot around 8:30am this morning before calling in the helicopter to help.

Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesman Percy Morokne said all three occupants were airlifted to Johannesburg's Milpark Hospital in a very critical condition. Opperman said the robbers managed to get away. When asked whether the helicopter had been fired at by the robbers. "As far as we know that is not the case". - Sapa
