Strict security for set-top boxes

Dunnow why Ivy is causing such a huge hype over a technology that already exists.

I'm still intrigued about this 70% Government subsidy on the DTT decoders. Strange how Government can subsidise things like TV & crap but not lift levies on things like petrol.

Ah damn. There goes my TV-theft business. Others' too. :D

What I'd like to know is how are they going to ensure the device doesn't work outside of SA's borders. Some sort of demented gps implementation?

Just wondering if a household cant buy a box for R500 how are they paying their licences.

A tough means test would be put in place to determine which households could receive the government's 70% subsidy for the boxes. The estimated cost of a box was R700.
Man ... the 2nd hand market for subsidized box-sets is going to be HUUUGE!

i.e. One "household" purchases 4 subsidized sets, uses one, and sells the other 3.

AWESOME!

I was wonering how Eksdom will provide power to 7 million STBs ?

This is soooooo played out.

Yea me too. How much extra would something like that add to the price of the box?

And so who gives a sh*t if it does work anyway - it's not like you'll get any sabc signal unless you really really close to a border (since it's not satelite)....

That woman is simply stupid!

very -ve comments indeed - are u spanners suggesting the poor just throw away the sets they have simply bcos they can't afford the boxes?

anyway, wonder if the sabc will take advantage of this & swicth u off if you don't pay ur tv lic. i assume the pre-req wud be a tv lic for receiving one of the boxes.

A derived advantage of this, might be that you won't need to pay for a TV license if you don't want SABC tv. Not exactly a big loss for many people...
O... they will make you pay even if you don't watch SABC.

Purely all just a waste of time south africa is the only southern african country which will be broadcasting in hd So the settop box won't work out of the country any way . Also i think R700 is a bit steep analog tv is only gonna be phased out in a few years any way So still lots of analogue watching.
What's a tv licence by the way lol
