Cell C going 3G?

That would be a good move I think.

I got a call from Cell C on my cell (I'm with Voda) a while back. They where doing a survey and just asked like 3 questions. And they ask what is the biggest reason I won't go with Cell C and I said because they don't have 3G.

I wonder how many other people said the same for the survey?

With the profits finally coming in Cell C now have an opportunity to move forward in the data market.

When they do introduce 3g, I doubt they will set a trend when it comes to pricing but rather follow the other operators leads. The reason I say this is because implementing a 3g network is very expensive and Cell C's network will not be able to handle a heavy influx of data subscribers which would lead to a less than satisfactory service.

"We're in process of reviewing our mobile data strategy. I can't say much right now but we'll make an announcement about next generation data products by year end," CEO Jeffery Hedberg told I-Net Bridge in a phone interview.
IMO CellC has missed the boat where 3G is concerned, best for all concerned if CellC just goes back to sleep and continues its love affair with 2.75G, perhaps when 4G is available, CellC can then catch a wakeup.

I find it interesting that CellC has decided to use Telkodemonopolies' "reviewing our mobile data strategy" phrase, and now that Telkodemonopolies also wants to do 3G, along comes CellC and says much the same...it's almost like CellC is asking Telkodemonopolies to buyout CellC [after selling off that 50% of Vodacom].

I am not so sure, there is a gap in the market for affordable 3G out of bundle usage along the lines of the VM 50c per meg. There is a spin off of getting the call income along with the data income. How many people have 40meg or 100meg bundles would see great value in a Cell C offering.

I rather agree. Cell C have missed the boat here, if they're only, maybe, going to announce something at the end of the year, it's a waste of money. Just go straight on to 4G, then they could be ahead of MTN and Vodacom. Isn't 4G already available - Korea and Japan? Can someone explain how it works?

Maybe Cell C;'s plan is to go 3G when its at its cheapest (hardware and other systems they need). Which would be after everyone wants 4G...

Probably. Then they would be able to trash 4G and say how it doesn't make sense financially etc just like they did to 3G...

Japan runs on 3G. Maybe Korea runs on faster, but Japanese phones,
from SoftBank and Docomo are mostly 2G/3G. 2G is still around some
parts of Japan but is mostly used for roaming. Saying this, JPN
phones are pretty amazing :).

I've sometimes wondered why we don't get any NEC phones here?

I still want to know what the guys were smoking that dismissed 3G as a gimmick.

I very much doubt that was the case. They would have looked at the s..t that they were in an decided that it was not feasable. After that, a good excuse would be needed. You can't exactly tell the market that you in too much kuk to do it.

I read that the Japanese makers don't want to compete with the likes of
Nokia, Sony-Erickson, Motorola etc in the international market. Also makers tailor make the phones for the providers, eg Sharp 920sh only goes to
SoftBank, while DoCoMo gets NEC. Still, Sharp has decided now to
enter the Hong Kong, Taiwanese and even mainland China market
and their phones are selling like hotcakes. We may see Sharp and other
makers like NEC, Toshiba and Panasonic in the West too.

I hope they make a scene and start off with HSPA+ (42 MBps), or the New CDMA spec( 326MBPs) they should blow the others out of the water if they want my vote. IMHO, CellC to now has been pathetic.
