More than a connection

When Neotel announced in April that it had finally got direct access to the landing stations of the SAT-3/SAFE undersea cable - which connects the continent's telephone systems to the world - at the Melkbosstrand in the Western Cape and Mtunzini in KwaZulu Natal the statement went almost unnoticed.

This really bugs me..

before they gained access there was all this news of telkom artificially starving SA of bandwidth and now we have reports of teh converse? Is it just more or anyone else notice this? And by not enough bandwidth i mean for current demand, not 2010.

2ndly, Neotel hasn;t done much for the cost of bandwidth since april really, maybe for leased lines like services yes, but then its been more of telkom's annual % cuts that they do. So yah.. seacom.. we will see.

Don't pump us with stuff we already know and then also more PR garbage from Angus Hay, please.

Hell if this is all that being a journalist is about, even Pooky could get it done.
Read up on what has happened for the last 4 years and then get Angus on the phone to spill you some stuff he has saved in MS Word 2007 for you lot.
Then insert indents, commas, split your paragraphs, be sure that your word count is what you editor needs and you're off.

This is the 2nd article within 2 days attributed to Financial Mail which looks outdated, the first one by days, this one by weeks. How do they land up on this website?

Neotel's view on providing access to broadband is significantly different from other players. While other operators see broadband as a scarcity Hay says that unlike other resources that are being used up, bandwidth is a "permanently growing resource" and does not need to be used sparingly.

Umm. Great. So I will go home tonight and use my Vodacom HSDPA connection to the full...and get hit by a R13000 bill like other forumites have in the past. I have not seen any change in my data bill since Neotel have launched so they can shut up until they positively affect my life...
 
Does mybroadband.co.za write about this issue 5 times a week to make it look like lots is happening?

Could I suggest two things -

1. Lets shut up about this issue and adopt a wait and see attitude..... cause empty promises are common here in SA

2. Lets not get to excited! If we are not even going to watch our own World Cup in HD then we are not going to be much further ahead in 2 years time...

The company previously indicated that it will leverage the VSNL shareholding in SAT3 to provide its clients with more affordable bandwidth on the cable, and that access to the SAT3 landing station will complete the picture.

Ironically, Neotel's parent company Tata Communications of India is now the largest partner in the consortium owning SAT-3/SAFE. But Hay points out that this gives Neotel little advantage in giving it a bigger say regarding the cable's landing sites. "You can't backdate rights. Tata has more in the consortium but it does not have more rights," Hay says.

At the moment they are big mouthed on Seacom. Just watch, in July 2009 you will read an article about how neotel cannot bring down prices because of reason X. We will have to way for them to resolve problem Y so that they can bring prices down. Once problem Y has been fixed we will discover that there is indeed a problem Z.

By the time 2010 WC is over there will be no more pressure to reduces prices and increase bandwidth, so neotel only has to hold out until then. At that point they can tell us the truth:

Neotel does not give a sh|t about the consumers, they want to help telscum keep the prices inflated. :mad::mad::mad::sick:

Umm..WHEN exactly did consumers start to benefit from this?
I havent seen a decrease in the exorbant prices of Teklom or Neotel..
i'm sorry..Neotel have had a VERY good opportunity to proof itself to the public when we all awaited it with bated breath. Since the very start of Neotel it has been publicity, promises, etc.. I HAVE SEEN ONLY INCREASES in TELEKOMS. You CANT make promises and not deliver to IT people we have memories like harddrives..

Are you buying your HSDPA service directly from Neotel?
No, you're not so how on earth can you blame Neotel for Vodacom's tarrifs?

Vodacom can buy bandwidth from Telkom for less than the consumer price of R65 per GiB yet they charge R1,989.00 for 10 GiB (R198.90/GiB).
That means Vodacom are marking up the bandwidth price by over 200% on their cheapest prepaid offering.
Go complain to Vodacom - they're the culprits.
 
If Neotel wants to shake up things and be competitive they'll need to provide better deals than Telkom. At the moment the wireless device they provide is inferior.
 
I would have assumed Larry would be more informed, since he is working for the Financial Mail.

One should remember that the cable belongs to an Investment consortium. Therefor Neotel and Telkom will pay the same price to use it. The only place one could benefit is if the Neotel costs are lower from the landing station to your own premises, which in my opinion won't be a drastic improvement.

So we will only see the benefit once there is an abundance of International connectivity forcing the Investment consortiums to compete for the user traffic.

Don't forget the Royalties Vodacom/MTN/Cell C/Sentech/iBurst has to pay for the use of GSM technology.
 
Geez

This is all good news, but my bill isn't coming down either. This month my line usage is costing me R700, my usage is costing me R1553 and I have an outstanding bill of R700 for another provider.

Come on Neotel, we need month to month fixed line packages, not contracts.
