Internet radio boost

Just can't see this being a big hit here in SA ...... as if we have spare gigs around for streaming music. Unfortunately, Fail :o (thanks Telscum).

erm how can this be any good? whats the R7000 for? there are other radio stations on the web for "free" (excluding telkom)

R7,500, what a joke.

It will be cheaper buying a latop with wifi and then plugging that in to your tv or hi-fi.

I used to do the IT work at VOW (Voice of Wits) campus radio.. and yes..streaming can be bandwidth intensive... but then again it depends on your streaming quality..

Our target was the Wits student populace, so most of them connected for free via LAN..

but R7000+, u got to be kidding me.

doesn't listening to radio via the Internet use a lot of bandwidth?
how much bandwidth would it use per hour?

If i have it correct, a station streaming at 64kbits/sec will use about 29Mb/hour. Not too bad.

But i guess the company thinks that if you can afford to spend R7000 on a device like that, you have money to spend on bandwidth.

What they dont mention is that the stations available also depend on your line speed...you cant do much with a 384k line...especially if its shared with somebody else...

Pandora

The best ever streaming music site has to be Pandora - you fill in some details of what you like and it will stream songs, based on your criteria, 24/7 to your PC/Home entertainment centre.

You can rate each song (or mark it as irrelevant) and thus, fine-tune what is streamed to you. You can save this as a profile.

You can build many profiles and fine-tune them to fit your exact mood or need.

Set-up cost: R0
Listening cost: Bandwidth
Listening to music that is suited to your mood or taste: Priceless

Used a Freecom Internet Radio in the UK. Cost R750 and has all the features of the one mentioned here. Most stations stream at 128k/256k so thats a fairly big hit on your cap.

The amount of data depends in the stream you listen to. 256kbps is HEAVY on the data but you will be amazed at the quality you get from a 40kbps AAC stream. Especially if you use Winamp.

I love internet radio ever since I installed Nokia Internet Radio on my N82, which costs less than this R7k+ solution and is much more portable. When I am at work or home I use Wifi to connect or outside it works fine on EDGE/3G connection. The cool thing about Nokia Internet Radio is you can give it bitrate preferences based on the connection in use. So on wifi I go for 256kbps but on EDGE/3G I preffer 40kbps.

I dont have an adsl line and I dont have R7500 to spend on such and item, but I do have my pc and for all its failings my iburst connection streams Absolute radio or Absoslute classic rock all the time Im online in front of the pc
