Relief from telemarketers

I will miss them, you can have so much fun playing with their minds.

This is good news! There is nothing like getting multiple calls from Cell C, Standard Bank and an insurance company in one day. So annoying...

A few years back, I inherited some money. Not much - most of it is already spent. The only people that knew about it were my lawyers, home affairs and my bank. Suddenly, my mailbox (snail mail) became filled with junk mail; credit card offers, insurance, loans that would "solve my financial problems forever", that sort of crap. Not to mention all the telesales calls I suddenly started receiving. I don't think my lawyers had anything to do with it. Home affairs is a possibility, but I am almost 100% certain that my "friendly" bank were the bastards that sold my contact details.

Maybe someone that knows more about these matters than I do could confirm or deny this, but don't municipalities also sell contact information to make some money on the side?

The bill should have one section as well that details that all calls should be coming from a clearly visible number!

But as previously stated one could have some fun as well if in the right frame of mind.

I loved it when they called on my cellphone and started off on their tangent/story. A quick e-mail to a colleague and he calls me on my landline.

"Oops my boss just called me to ask me something, would you mind holding the line I am really interested..."

Take mug and go and grab some coffee - 5 minutes later..."Hello, sorry to keep you waiting...now tell me again what you wanted to say." Listen to story and then quickly say no thank you.

I did not ask to be sold new cellphone contracts/insurance or whatever - if you contact me unsolicited I will have some fun and waste your money for calling me on my cellphone.
:D:D:D:D:D

What if this database serves only to collect the contact details of more people who unsuspectingly think they're removing themselves!?
Nice 0861 MaxiCall number as well if you want to de-register. Bloody sharks - they put you on their lists and then you have to incurr time & expense to get yourself removed.

Somebody at work suggested saying "I'll quickly go fetch him" when they ask for Mr X and then just leaving the phone. I wouldn't go to those lengths, but they can be damned irritating. When I say no thank you, I mean it. They don't seem to get it and often ask why I'm not interested... that's usually when the conversation turns ugly.

The online opt-out registration is outsourced, and is on what appears to be an insecure site (i.e. info sent there is not encrypted). The DMASA site also says that the list can be obtained by non-members: "There is no cost to DMA members for this service, however non-members will have to pay a fee to the DMA for the list". I recon I'll submit some fake info and see how long it takes before I get spammed......

Well I can confirm this as last year when I paid off & cancelled my credit card I was flooded with calls begging me to use their credit cards and from banks I have never even visited!! the same damn thing when I paid off my car!! all of a sudden I had credit offers from banks & deals from car dealers!! I got to a stage where I just put the phone down and left them hanging on for an hour or so!!:)

YOU ARE WATCHED by your banks & every transation you do!! what goes into your accounts & what goes out. Anything out of the ordinary rings alarm bells and they start calling. They are BIG BROTHER of today!!

I don't see any mention of what will happen to companies when they ignore this bill? Also who is going to enforce it? Until such time I don't see the telemarketers giving a hoot. They will just put the phone down when you tell them to stop bugging you and you won't have any way to follow it up.

This happens to me too:

- Every time the credit card is paid up, we receive spam from DirectAxis. So now we've left the thing alone, and voila- no more DirectAxis spam

- Every time I change jobs and a pension is paid out, I get spammed to high heaven by these telemarketers.

- Every time I buy something on HP, or if I take out/amend insurance, I get spammed by telemarketers

its our wonderful banks that keep tapping us. they sell our info or trade it with new ventures. wonderful stuff i tell you

I fear you are correct. Who is going to take the time ( and spend the $$$ ) to take them to court? I reckon it will be SNAFU.
