This is good news indeed - cybersquaters are really not doing much except hoping for a big pay day. This new body makes it easier to stop this rot...
 
I don't know - "mixit" vs "mxit"??? Maybe I should see if "mixt" is available. How many typo error variants do you want to protect? I think this is a bit pathetic really.
 
i would rule in favor of the squatter - mixit and mxit are two different things - if they own mxit whats the problem? what about if he had a mixing DJ type of site?


ie: MIX IT!

That would have been fine. But that's not what a squatter does. A cyber squatter just puts up an inactive dummy page.

If www.mixit.co.za was an active page with active updates about a DJ mixing is stuff, then I would have been in favor of him.

McDonalds is not the same as MacDonald, and mxit is not the same as mixit.

does SAA own the rights to SSA too?
 
This is ridiculous. If I own a plot of land somewher that I'm not using and it happens to be adjacent to someone's house they can just take it from me?

It's all about whether the person purchased the domain in bad faith or not. Also, just because you registered a domain name and put up 1 or 2 pages of info on that site does not mean you have any legal right to that name by default. If your domain name infringes on the copyright of other registered companies it's a trademark law violation which makes you a cybersquatter.

im sorry, but "mix it" and "mxit" are two, very different things....

so you arer saying kazaa.com has rights to kazam.com or kaza.com?
 
look at it this way.

some guy pays and registers the domain dapple.com. now, should apple be entitled to that name as well, to cover typo's?

really now, many words can be made from 1 brand name, by changing or adding 1 single letter - the company is not allowed to take over all of them - how many combo's could you make out of apple.com?

zapple.com
appze.com
apples.com

what if a guy made mapping software and called it "Map PLE" - should he now not be able to own mapple.com because apple wants to cover it's user's Typo's ??!!

Just wait until you have a domain name that some cyber squatter is trying to use to extort money from you. These guys are the skum of the earth and deserve to lose at every opportunity.

It all depends on what the person wanted to do with the site. For example, if dapple also sold computers with a fruit logo, it could be argued that they were infringing. Same thing if they made their site look similar to try and benefit through ads etc. If someone bought it to try and extort money from Apple, then, they should also be on thin ice.
