AVG, one of the leading suppliers of anti-virus software, released an update yesterday that caused more harm then good the outcry started. The signature update, dated November 9, allowed the program to think that user32.dll was actually a trojan and advised you to delete it but it doesn't stop there, if you do delete it and you restart your computer it will put your computer on a continuous reboot loop.

I've been very unhappy with AVG 8 deleting files without asking - even when I set it up to ask first.

Time to look elsewhere - Avast perhaps.
 
I was happy with AVG 7, but since I got 8.0 I've been thinking of moving to Avast... maybe now I'll actually get around to doing it.
 
I used AVG until version 8. Moved on to Avast, but kept having crap with it on my wife's XP machine... updates just stopped happening for no particular reason, etc etc. Trashed it, and put Eset nod32 on. I'm very happy now, it uses a crapload less memory, and scans MUCH quicker than avast did.
 
ROFL. AVG = FAIL. ESET NOD32 is a way better program and probably the best anti-virus application out there.
 
I used to use AVG but am now much happier with Avast. Except for that damn "Virus database has been updated" voice coming through my speakers every so often.

Quite right, but I've been using the trial for the past 18 odd days, and since I'm very happy with it because it seems to work without killing my machine, I'm quite happy to fork over the cash for two licenses when the trial expires.

Unfortunately 'free' doesn't always mean better or faster. I sure as hell wish it did.

Not to worry Kopite, he still thinks Manchester United are the best footy club.

I hate the regular reminders to purchase... went back to AVG.

well, like I said, not one issue yet ...... luckily I don't base everything on 'independent' (ja, right) studies huh.

I used the NOD32 trial for 30 days, after which the trial extended to another 30 for some reason.

I eventually bought a license for the whole Smart Security package.

Yeah, the best FREE application. Any decent anti-virus application is something you need to pay for. GDATA? WTF is that? I don't think anyone has even heard of that, and that makes me doubt the validity of this "comparison". By far, the most used and trused anti-virus applications are NOD32, McAfee, AVIRA, Kaspersky. These results are bogus.
