Concern as Icasa seeks to hike licence fees

This is not Promoting Competition!!

How can you suddenly be expected to pay almost double the amount for license fees?

Somehow i think miss Poison Ivy has something to do with this?

And now us as consumer are going to be loosing out YET AGAIN!!

Hmmmmm, ICASA has to be funded to survive.
If governmint funds ICASA, then they'll want to run ICASA.
If ICASA funds itself, it has to gather funds somehow.

Do we need ICASA though? I mean, seriously ... what on earth has ICASA really done for us so far?

Besides not allowing me to build my own FM transmitter to broadcast MP3's through my home, and not allowing me to run a network cable over to my neighbour's home, and not allowing me to setup a small business selling VOIP based telecoms services to people on the street.

They've done a lot to stop me from doing stuff, but nothing to aid me in doing stuff.

Try 30 times for some players! : 0.1% => 3%

Plus, this is now on gross revenue, rather than net operating income, so it is even more than 30 times!

Holy crap! I'm so waiting to see ICASA's budget for the next few years, to see how they plan to use all this money!

The proceeds go to the National Treasury. Fair enough that ICASA's costs are covered by licensing fees, but not by vast multiples. Its not like anyone is abolishing corporate taxes anytime soon. No reason why this industry should be paying more taxes than any other.

They will do anything to stifle growth of bandwidth in this country.

Somehow Ivy and ICASA does not see how important it is to have proper bandwidth if you want economic growth.

typical SA. just as things start to look good for consumers, some 'authority' comes along and imposes massive cost hikes. Jeez. :(

If feels to me this country is in self distruct mode. Land, Health, Crime, Education ect ect. What the hell is going on?

FEK me no wonder IVY decided against appealing on a lost cause... if she can't win then CHARGE other people double for the licenses! FEK YOU IVY

I think it was mentioned at the MyBroadband conference yesterday by Dominic that the license fee increases were on the cards even before the Altech court judgement came out. So it was unlikely that this was pushed for by Ivy as any kind of revenge. Just saying.

It might also be a blessing in disguise in that it will keep the smaller guys who do not have the capital from jumping into the industry. Only those who have the financial muscle to actually compete in this industry will be able to get licenses.
