In our robust democracy, we are quick to criticise members of the government for failures or weak leadership, but the opposite should also be true. For instance, the telecommunications industry has been fortunate to benefit from the light but firm touch of communications minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri and her team.

Man who is raking in money hand over fist praising the government that made said raking possible, what a shock!

I don't have much else to say about the man worthy of the space here.

She has also championed managed liberalisation in infrastructure provisioning, as provided for by the act, especially because spectrum is a scarce resource that has to be managed very carefully. Her decision to take up battle with value-added network service providers (Vans) should be seen in this light. It is not in SA’s strategic interest to dilute a scarce resource by giving it to operators who do not have the resources or the intention to roll out infrastructure.

Um, WHAT?
Lets take a look at what is required to setup a simple Wi-Fi Network in Alex:
1. Purchase an ADSL Wi-Fi router.
2. Install the router at a point with Power and an ADSL phone connection.
3. Purchase bandwidth from an ISP.
4. Begin selling services that utilise that bandwidth that is now available on a 50m radius from the router, to anybody who connects to your router. These services include:
4.1. VOIP Phone calls using SKYPE.
4.2. Internet Banking and facilitating the use of Cell phone banking.
4.3. Educational / Lookup services.
4.4. Design and Publishing/Hosting services.
4.5. Mini-Internet Cafe.
5. The skills and the drive to perform these services.
6. A flipping license from ICASA.

Now .. where is the fail point, making this option IMPOSSIBLE ... It's point 6.
Who is responsible for point 6?
Must be the white rabbit.

I'm not sure if it's what I just ate, or what I have just read [partially], but I am feeling physically sick right now.

Did AK-C Senior really write that blog ["By Alan Knott-Craig*"] and does he really expect us to believe that Poison Ivy has been good for SA, and that Vodafone would not have snapped up more shares in Vodacom if Poison Ivy were not already on her way out...

My mind is certainly spinning, there already are too many Poison Ivy plants within !CASA, the last thing we need is another Poison Ivy admirer on !CASA's council.

So, it's okay to allow somebody to resell the use their cellular telephone, but it's not okay to allow somebody to resell the use of their bandwidth.

And this bloke is applauding IVY's select choice of who can do what.

Bah humbug.

/me stops .. this entire article can be ripped apart with really simple examples.
 
I started reading the argument, and got fed up after a couple of lines. What unmitigated rubbish.

Personally, I maintain that the only possible reason that Ivy has been following her clearly destructive policy is that she has been in bed with the big corporations.

Perhaps, apart from paying her bills, Vodacom is now giving free ego-massages. I wonder, could A K-C also be giving her other massages? :eek:
 
Even though AK-C is no longer Vodacom's CEO, I suspect there is going to be some significant fallout at Vodacom from his statements of support for Poison Ivy, I feel sorry for Dot Field who will no doubt spend her whole day tomorrow trying to respond to queries about what AK-C wrote and whether he was of sound mind at the time.

Best stick to the bird watching IMO.
 
in a recent press statement the DoC mentioned the need to heal the rift between it and industry - wonder if the man has a new lobbying retainer? or, as v3g mentioned, this is part of the rumour re the man wanting to take a role at ICASA?
 
Very interesting. Why would he say such things?

1. He's gone senile. I don't think so.

2. He built a company and got very very rich in an environment where too much threatening competition was eliminated by Ivy and co, and this is his way of saying thanks for the position at the pig-trough ( or a cover-up of prior payoffs that some suspect to have happened ).

3. He has a new venture in mind and some pandering to Ivy and the ANC in pre-election times might get him what he wants.

Unlike many here who have spoken of the man in fawning terms, I neither trust him nor like him. There is something behind this cr@p, and that something is probably a bit corrupt.

Thinking about this a bit more....

When you get a bit older and you are maybe not scrabbling for a monthend paycheck, your mind can turn to "giving back" or "contributing". Certainly better to some than getting bored out of your skull sitting on a stoep sipping tea.

I rather like the ideas expressed about his wanting to get into politics or, more probably, getting some position of influence at ICASA or as some kind of special govt "adviser". Then he can try to implement his "vision" assuming he has one, or some such. It'll take money ( probably to party coffers ) ( which you will NOT see ), and pandering, which we do see.
