SA's next big thing

THE NEXT MAJOR TREND in South Africa's technology sector will be a broadband explosion over the next few years, facilitated by undersea cables such as Seacom coming on stream. It will mean faster economic growth and improved efficiencies - if this country takes the bull by the horns.

"...Take the bull by the horns?" I think not. We will rather spend a lot of time talking a load of bull instead. I will believe it when I see it.

I see broadband prices, specifically ADSL, is going up @ a few places. So it will be like the petrol price. Raise it by 300% en then drop it by 50%. Should make everyone feel that all these BS articles was worth it.

It's funny how people never seem to join the dots. Telkom has no capacity on SEACOM (perhaps they are simply too arrogant to buy from them), and will still be using expensive SAT-3/SAFE bandwidth until EASSy is ready some time in 2010. Don't expect ADSL prices to drop; they're more likely to rise.

Users of non-Telkom services can expect some benefit from SEACOM, but perhaps you need to ask your provider whether they will be using SEACOM - something like: "Are you still using blood bandwidth from the west coast of Africa, or have you switched to fair trade bandwidth from SEACOM?" ;)

ahhh, a fix at last.

Too bad after it wears off, it leaves me with about as much bandwidth as tik does me money.

Was just wondering what the status was on all the other cables were. I remember reading articles here that made mention of about 3 different sub-marine cables that were "in the pipeline". Would it be possible to get some sort of status fedback regarding these as well?

Midgley says SA's Government has woken up to the need to get closer to its citizens and is working on having a single point of access for enquiries. Home Affairs' "Who Am I Online" project is one example, he says.

Riiiight. I cannot see SA Government having a high priority for internet access and cheap telecommunication when this is/has been their bread and butter for the last god knows how long. On top of that, they have much more serious issues to deal with, like crime, unemployment, education, etc and they're ignoring those problems quite well enough already.

Wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I missed this one and have an incomplete Seacom Article Collection... My glorious SAC...

I think there is way to much hope being placed on SEACOM. Not that it won't be completed, I'm sure it will, but given the SA telecoms track record I doubt very much that we will see the sizeable drop in pricing that is being predicted. The SA internet Mafia will see to that, capiche...
