Broadband Report 2008

Please let us know if you find any mistakes in the report.

I viewed it first! ;) :D :p

WebAfrica has undergone a few drastic changes and I think it is only fair to mention that according to my knowledge they are currently the 2nd or 3rd largest Hosting Provider in the country. I think their ADSL issues the past year got their score down a bit, slower response time (speaking from experience) to support queries than recent years, as well as their new offerings that took center stage. I think WebAfrica will be top of the list come 2009 if they start to actively market their offerings such as DSL Groups (which I know is the next big thing for up and coming companies) as well as keeping their Hosting Packages affordable and hassle free. You're still tops in my books WA.

A number of oopses:

Telkom DSL 4mbps pricing doesnt look right - it's cheaper than the 512kbps ?

DSL512 website is shown as www.telkon.co.za (perhaps intentional, or badly scanned page? :) )

Wisp Wi-FI website is wrong. It must be www.wapa.org.za not waspa

Also, what on earth is the background image ? It looks a bit like a high voltage isolator ?

Looking good otherwise.

Broadband Report 2008: Draft 1 Attached

Hi RPM, on page 5 the legend for download speeds does not differentiate between local and international.

regards

F

Sentech MyWireless international download speed looks faster than the local speed. Is that right?

I'd like to know how many people partook in the survey.
Split into fixed and wireless.

So would I LOVE to know how many people participated in the Broadband Report and is there a comparable report elsewhere in the industry.

Who audits the results?

We would also like to know what the criteria were for being selected to being tested in this survey. Screamer Telecoms would have welcomed a test of their WiMAX network, packages and service.
Watch this space next year ;)

Well I don't really know if there is any report/survey that touches across the spectrum of players in the local broadband arena.

I personally don't feel that auditors are needed in this regard.

I couldnt care less about auditors - its the companies who 'require' such information before they take a report seriously. :(

Well companies will have to learn about trust in our arena ;)
If they could? :rolleyes::o

I agree!!!

Unfortunately results are worthless to the commerical world without 'audited results'. Trust me I have learned the hard way :(

Corporates are so good at pulling out red tape to protect themselves and I think with audited results the report holds it's own weight... where trust no longer is an issue and forces the corporates to give some real comments instead of the usual: "Hide behind process" nonesense so common among SA Corporates or else in all honesty just how useful is this report unless of course it is just for us here?

Yes, but as you mention, at the end of the day, it's for us here and also for service providers to guage what end users think of them in comparison to their competition.
It's a public forum and I think that service providers really use this occasion to see what they are up against.

Audited or not, those SP's that are mentioned, sit up and take note of what's going on here.
This can be seen to be true, by virtue of their input here on the forum via their representation here, interaction with forumites and by their attendance and input/feedback, etc given at the Annual MyBroadband Conference(s).

Which is awesome!!!

I just think the report will be even more awesome if it were professionally audited. It could serve as a true dipstick into our Telecoms Industry and even be used internationally to compare as a reflection of our SP's value.

Surely you can see the value form that perspective?

Right now it is just a report put together by 'disgruntled' users?

:)
I certainly do value the perspective of it.
And rpm could surely give feedback on whether the report is audited or not - I can't say :)

All I'm saying is that, on a personal level, I'm not particularly thrown off if the report is audited or not.

Also if users were/are disgruntled, then this would be the perfect scenario with which to draw attention to their issues.

Well I would love to use it on a certain SP to shove in their face with regard to pricing, but unfortunately the report useless to me and holds no water unless it has been audited. :(

Can any of the admins let us know please?

The reults are exicitng though! Well at least for me they are :D

Erm, even if we do audit the report, the information is old by the time February arrives.
Perhaps you should do an audit on your own situation and decide for yourself.

The problem is I am stuck with the SP I am having to use (except at work), so something like this report really helps when fighting for price relief.

Anyway, I dont mean to sound as if I am questioning the results, simply relaying the rubbish that corporates have to say, and yes, I think I am suggesting something that would make the report immensly valuable in the commercial world.
