Fastest broadband service in SA

December 2008, the fastest broadband (average) speed is a little over 1mb. How sad.

Parrot-mode on:
Neotel can keep their rubbish until the Ethernet device becomes available.

I don't have a choice. No coverage from Neotel :(

ditto and no telkom line either (4months now) and now they tell me they not going to do anything till next year.

Interesting to see the top 3 being so close (Telkom, MTN, VC with 86%, 85%, 85%) and then a big gap to the rest.

Also interesting to see that 2 of those are mobile, competing with a fixed line and *nearly* beating it.

Am I the only one that finds it rather weird the Wimax, iBurst, NeoTel and MyWireless are classified as fixed-line services? Or am I completely missing the plot?

I am guessing the test were done with a single threaded download. Load up a download manager, download a big file using a couple of threads and there is nothing out there that can touch a Telkom 4mb/s ADSL line. Pity it is so expensive though :( Burning through bandwidth at the full 4 mb/s makes me weep!

The other fixed line broadband services, in order of performance, were Telkom WiMax, Telkom DSL 512, Sentech MyWiress, Telkom DSL 384 and Neotel NeoConnect Lite.

Huh? ADSL is the ONLY fixed line BB service in the country. The others are wireless, which makes the comparison in the category of 'fixed line broadband' a little pointless... I'd suggest you add another category for the wireless options, and if you really want to compare the offerings with each other, then do that seperately...

This is quite sad, to think that I cant get a better connection than my 4mb DSL, seriously terrible... and its over priced and falsely sold as 4mbps 9which seriously i haven't been able to get yet...sigh

For local, I get very close to the theoretical speed. I couldn't even get half of that for wireless.

really how often do you use local? I never use local..why?..cause whats local? It's not as though I spend my time online browsing Absa's site, mBB is as much local as I use sadly

Neotel seems to be going the same way as iBust at the moment. They are looking very shady with a lot of things. I have been reading lots and lots of bad press about them lately!

fixed line / fixed wireless. Same thing basically for the purpose of testing. Does it matter if it's wireless but you can't use it in multiple locations. Yeah I know you gonna say you could use Neotel and Iburst in another area but it's not truely mobile, is it?
