Right been hitting my head against the wall trying to setup my old man's dsl.

I logged into the router using the default log in details and at the setup option under setup used the Internet account settings page which give you the 3 step screens to setup your connection ie entering the user name and pass Telkom provided and wifi settings.

After rebooting I am unable to directly access the net from the router and had to manually setup a PPPoe connection which have to be clicked every time I start Windows. Also the internet green light on the router is not on ,,,,but the dsl, wireless and E1 green lights are all on.

Any idea how to access the net from the router without having to use the PPPoe shotcut on the desktop?

Is this a self-install on a new ADSL line? If so, have you activated the line?

yes don't the use the stupid software they give to install.

Its an ethernet router login through 192.168.1.1 i think it is _ instructions in the manual. DO NOT use a fixed ip address unless you have it set within the router control panel itself and only if that is the only pc going to connect through the cable. If you need the wifi function YOU MUST have the DHCP up or else you will get this kind of clashing with the router trying to serve two pc's

also activate the mac addressing and use the other security function from with the brouters web page based setup.

HTH

that router is the Anti-Christ... I for the life of me can't get the fscking wireless working... and it hates my lan port on my pc and it's fussy with dsl (it works then doesn't, then works...)

When they work they are "ok", but i have had so many of those routers being faulty out the box, or just being weird. I HATE them.

Anyway, sounds like you started in the right direction setting up the password and so on. If you are able to setup a manual connection from your PC, then some settings on the router might be messed up. It should be setup as PPPoE on the router, not bridge or LLC, go fiddle, also the VPI and VCI should be 8 and 35.

If all esle fails try resetting the router with the little button on the back, and enter username and password again.

Ive setup plenty of those routers, no problems. Some of the old one's had a power related issue, where the device would not 'sync'. Try what Johnny said by resetting, and don't forget to verify.

Unless they've fixed it in newer firmware, if you use WPA, the WPA password has to be numbers only, and 10 characters long.

WPA PSK.
Must have. I've just set one up for someone with 12 characters numbers and letters. The default one printed on the underside is the same.

Using Terry's guide which Sackboy posted the green light for internet is now on. When accessing the router via 10.0.0.02 it shows that the router is connected to the internet.

When starting windows Xp now Skype,Kaspersky ect is online and updates so I know the router is connected to the net. I still cannot surf the net however using firefox or IE7 it says page cannot be opened and I have to setup a PPPoe connection manually before connecting.

Must I access the router and setup something else to be able to connect to the web without having to click on the Telkom connection I manually created?

Can you access http://www.telkom.co.za?

You unfortunately need to supply a DNS server addy manually with the 105 if you don't use bridge mode.

For saix, IIRC, that would be 196.25.1.1 and 196.25.1.9 .

So, just go to the connections properties, leave everything else on obtain automatically and enter those two DNS server addy's and you should be up and running.

Could this be the solution. It sounds like it.

Problem Description 4:
When the wizard tries to open the Telkom website or when I try to open any other
website, a Dial-up Connection screen pops up asking me to connect to the internet. It
doesn’t matter what choice I make I can not connect or see the website.
Solution:
1. Your Internet Explorer is still setup to connect to the Internet using a dial-up account
such as traditional analog or ISDN. Please change this setting to “Never Dial a
connection”. You will find this setting on the internet options form. Click on Start>
Control Panel> Internet Options, then click on the connections Tab. Now check the
“Never Dial a Connection” button. If the problem persists, click the “Setup” button in
the top-right corner of the connections tab. Select “Connect to the Internet”, “Setup
my Connection Manually”, “Connect Using a Broadband connection that is always
on” and then click finish

Those Routers are pretty simple to setup. I have done a few myself.
I have however run into a problem with a new one at my office. WiFi does work for ****.

Perhaps a firmware upgrade is needed or if it is still under warranty take if back to Telkom and get them to replace it.

I cannot believe this thread, this must be the 1000th time someone is having issues with this junk from Telkom. Do yourself a favour try and get your loot back and buy a brandname router.

It's still for sale by Telkom. I saw one today.

Not everyone knows as much as you about routers and will trust Telkom to sell them something decent. At least with a Telkom router they will support the setup if you call in. Mention anything else and they refuse (in my experience). I know someone who uses it 24/7 without issue if the truth be told. The logs confirm the uptime as well.

This looks like a common problem: Wireless works but fixed LAN connection fails. The solutions seems to be to go to your LAN connection (My Computer >> My Network Places >> View Network Connection >> Local Area Connection) and manually enter your IP and DNS settings (Internet Protocol/TCP/IP).

My router gave problems today and only wireless ADSL router I could find was the Telkom Mega 105WR. Struggled for a good few minutes trying to fix the LAN. I am taking it back on Monday :(
