All 5800 XpressMusic phones in SA may have a failure in only a few months.
According to the article posted HERE

With Nokia 5800 NAM hitting the stores this week, and releases in other parts of the world planned soon, many of you must be eager to buy one, and spend a good chunk of your hard earned money on it.

Don’t. Not until you read this:

All Nokia 5800 XM handsets made before February have a major defect! They have a defective speaker that WILL die within a few months and will have to be replaced...

Oh no.

Hopefully someone who already owns a 5800 could go and have their IMEI number checked out..

Bad news.

I just ordered my handset today.

:(

like the article says: these things happen. It could happen to any company's phones. We'll just have to wait and see.

Sure.

But what I didn't want to hear, is that all 5800 phones in SA may have the problem.

And for me, who just ordered one, this is bad (worrying) news.

Quite possible. But then again it will fall under Nokias warranty when it breaks or MTN and they will have to fix it...so it may be an inconvenience sure...but it will get fixed. (I hope)

I hear what you're saying. Is there perhaps a website where you can put in your IMEI number to check if it comes from the bad batch?

Do MTN offer a demo phone to use while the 5800 phone is being serviced?

:(

I have no idea.

I am hoping someone will post a link to one, though.

Doesn't Nokia have different factories and suppliers for the different regions? Maybe (hopefully) ours is from the "good batch"

In any event: I'm getting mine tomorrow morning so I intend to enjoy it while I can. We'll cross the bridge when we come to it...

+1 :)

Ok, I have a way to check Man. date.

Enter: #92702689#

Displays - 1.Serial Number, 2.Date Made, 3.Purchase Date, 4.Date of last repair (0000 for no repairs), 5.Transfer User Data.
To exit this mode you need to switch your phone off then on again.

Doesn't help us when we take delivery of our phones...

:(

EDIT:

Apparently, the issue had been cleared up by the North American release date.
If we fall under the Middle East/Africa region, it's entirely possible that we have the new version.

Hopefully we have the phones with the .11 firmware release..

Phones have a warranty, normally 2 years and if it is a manufacturers fault Nokia HAS to fix it, no questions asked. I would rather promote other phones than Nokia in my experience though.

Well if there was an equivalent SE phone at the same price point with the same features then I would've been sold. But alas there is not :(
