Intel releases Xeon 5500 range

Dell wants about 40k for an unusable config (1.85GHZ CPU 1GB RAM) extra 15K for a usefull CPU and 6K for 8GB RAM .... I See intel has launched their Nehalem motherboards though ....

Should be able to raytrace porn in realtime with one of those puppies :D

Lets not talk about amd because they are so far behind the only thing they will offer is value for money.

Not wanting to sound totally ignorant, but is it possible to use a xeon processor in a normal PC setup?

Yes you can however most Xeon based machines are server orientated so they generally have PCIex8 slot at the most.

There are some Xeon based workstations out there though (at great cost) (Dell T7500 High end version is about R 178K)

What's the disadvantages of doing that? Seems like the Xeon ranges are generally more powerful than normal right?

Edit got it thanks PSC

Price?? Xeons are pretty expensive 10K+ for a quad core 1.6. Also Mobo support could be an issue, they designed for Workstation/server use, not end user....

The new Xeons are based on the Nehalem core. So unless you want more than one Quad core CPU, you can get similar performance from a Core i7 system
