No drives in disk management (XP)

Yeap, if I goto "manage" (on my computer) goto "Disk Management"

All I see is the 2 DVD drives, no other drives.

Any idea how to fix this.

As you can see, this post, along with my other post shows my PC is fubar!
But I am NOT allowed to format it till I've explored all options.

This one however (even with Googling) has me stumped.

Any ideas?

I need to get my drives back (so I can delete partitions etc)
 
can u see them in your bios ? and are they perhaps seagate drives ? causes there are a number of seagate drives that need updated flash to correct a manufacturing problem...
 
can you remove the drive controller as a device and reboot so that Windows re-detects it?
 
i suspect that its caused by a service that's not running which the disk management console is dependant on
