Cosatu throws in the towel?
June 4, 2009

The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) is no longer boycotting cellphone operator Vodacom because it would be a "difficult campaign to sustain".

"The meeting discussed a proposal to launch a consumer boycott of Vodacom but decided not to do so," said Cosatu secretary general Zwelinzima Vavi on Thursday following a central executive committee meeting.

"Legal contracts signed by consumers including unions make this a difficult campaign to sustain," he added.

Cosatu considered boycotting Vodacom to protest against its listing and the sale of R22,5-billion worth of Telkom shares in Vodacom to the British company Vodafone.

Cosatu in May lost a last-minute court bid to prevent Vodacom's listing on the JSE.

"The CEO of Vodacom has since requested a meeting with Cosatu to discuss our concerns," said Vavi.

"We want to express our concerns... will Vodacom still have a drive to roll out efficient communications to our people? We want to understand in greater details the impact of the split."

He also said Cosatu wanted to meet the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) to find out if it was still going to hold hearings into the Vodacom listing.

Icasa said, shortly before the listing, it would hold public hearings in June.

"Is Icasa going ahead with the public hearings? What will be the purpose?" asked Vavi.

He also lamented the "poor service" by Telkom and slow and expensive broadband in South Africa. - Sapa

so they launch an urgent high court action on something they only now "want to understand in greater details"

idiots!

I thought ICASA already indicated they won't carry on with the hearings. Reported here a while ago.
I must say that Vavi should really be better informed. This was a public statement by ICASA which was well reported on.

The trade union (Craven) also previously said that Vodacom was started with a 50-50 share (Telkom and Vodafone). I was surprised that they did not go through the trouble of researching the initial shareholding and subsequent moves before going on such drive to stop the deal. Really not good for such a high profile and powerful organisation...

Was it not the start of a power play between COSATU and the new Govt? Drawing the line in the sand right at the beginining of the 'relationship'?

There shouldn't even be a power play. They're a trade union group!

I really don't understand why in a country which such a massive unemployment rate our trade unions can have so much power.

COSATU wants to meddle in an agreement between two supposedly private companies, NUMSA is requesting that the interest rate be dropped another percent, NUM (a union for mine workers for those who don't know) is requesting increased pay for doctors (what?...I know doctors treat mine workers, but that isn't really a reason to get involved in their pay disputes, or perhaps doctors are now working in the mines too? Are times really that hard?). These unions really need to stop meddling and start concentrating on their members' wishes and needs.

Also, since when is it acceptable to perform a "sympathy strike"? What?!?

<Cosatu> Boycott Vodacom!!
<Advisor> Sir, you still have to pay till the end of your 24 month contract. If we cancel now it will cost the union several million.
<Cosatu> Oh, ok, no more boycott. We'll get you next time capitalist peeegz.

Hahaha, in other words they epic failed at a boycott. As if they were going to manage to get enough people together to boycott Vodacom and have it make a dent in Vodacom's earnings or something.

Poor eetle COSATU.

"Eish. It didn't work, we gave up"

If it was really that important, they'd suffer through it!
Where's the commitment to the cause!

Lazy arses

They most probably handed Zwelinzima Vavi a Virgin Mobile sim and then reality kicked in. :)

It probably would not make good business sense, but if I were Vodacom, I would reject any new contracts from COSATU and tell them to take their business elsewhere. Vodacom could cite the reason as 'there is a minimum IQ requirement which COSATU does not meet'.

Get over yourself COSATU. Don't forget that the real majority of RSA citizens cheer every time you lose. I'm not talking about your so called "vast majority".

Vavi and Craven - time to change feet...
Their election as leaders says it all for the organisation.
