New West Coast cable gets go-ahead

Yea, Seacom was starting to become boring. New "will lower costs" myth is in the works.

Now all the ISPs can start pointing at Main One for lower prices.

When 2010 hits and Main One goes live they will again have excuses as to why prices need to stay high.

BORING!

This is great news. This will provide a fully diverse path for SEACOM, effectively and finally once and for all definitely maybe breaking Sat3/SAFE's monopoly on fully diverse international bandwidth.

Seriously though, with MainONE and SEACOM operating, there is no longer the need to even consider SAT3, so prices have to come down.

Its hard to be positive when you know there will still be many obstacles to overcome

Ah great - some new info on this, i've been waiting for it - thanx MyBB!

Yes, 2 Big cables is an awesome thing, more competition, and more bandwidth capacity for SA. lets not forget EASSY (although smaller) either. so make it 3. oh - and WACs, so 4.

You can forget about Telkom's SaT3 though.

WACS FTW!!!!!

Better broadband services and lower prices are brought about by competition. This is nothing new and the OECD’s Taylor Reynolds commented on how SA’s broadband situation can be improved: “Countries with strong competition quickly drop prices and increase broadband speeds.” Taylor Reynolds, OECD.

This means that every bit of competition will help and should be welcomed. I noticed that some of the more negative members say that ‘nothing will drive down bandwidth prices’ and the like, but the fact is that international bandwidth prices have already significantly reduced because of SEACOM – even before it became operational! The same will happen with other systems, so I for one welcome all these initiatives.

you see... even uncle rpm agrees with me! :p

it's pretty clear that certain strangle holds on the broadband in the country will fast be loosening their grip, just be patient, we've waited this long. as the saying goes, good things come to those who wait, and damn have we been waiting. but still the glimmer is there.

RPM, I reckon it is because some ISP's have already made statements that they will not Lower Prices/Provide Bigger Caps/etc even WITH Seacom in the market.

The Time is running out for excuses - Bring on the Cables, Bring on the Bandwidth!

Is it just me, or does this cable look like it isn't making its way all the way down the west coast?

RPM at first i was going to make some typical neg comment. But after reading your comment i changed my mind and say : I hope you and others are right and i cannot wait to be wrong.
