Johannesburg – An Australian tennis player, Brydan Klein, who called South African Raven Klaasen "a ****ing ******" during a championship in England last week, is paying dearly for it.

Klein, 19, was fined around R110 000 and suspended from Tennis Australia's (TA) Australian Institute of Sport Pro Tour Programme.

Klein could also face further action for his racist comment made to South African's fourth best player. The ATP Tour are investigating the matter and could take further action against Klein.

The TA suspension is expected to hurt Klein the most. The institute consists of an elite group of players whose careers are developed with great care by the Australian government and several sporting bodies.

In several international media reports, Klein apologised for making the racist comment.

"I would like to clarify my position on an incident that occurred during my match against Raven Klaasen in the last round of qualifying for the AEGON International at Eastbourne on June 14," Klein said in a statement.

"During the second set, after losing a point, I audibly used a racial slur. It was not my intention to racially vilify my opponent or cause offence to anybody else and I am deeply embarrassed that I behaved in this manner.

"I deeply regret my serious error in judgment in using this word and I am very sorry for the offence this has caused.

"After the match I called my opponent Raven and apologised for what had happened and also apologised for any offence caused to his support team.

Johann Koorts, chairperson of the South African Tennis Association (SATV), said on Tuesday night that although the incident had been discussed at their meeting, they had not decided on a plan of action. "We are awaiting the ATP Tour report and will then decide about our follow up actions."

on the other day at school my child playing cricket and he were called the W-WORD from mr romogotselalabela(sorry about the spelling)not use to spelling like that,so ja w-word means white bastard,so i say nothing wrong K-WORD you go aussie.......

Elther do you not understand that racial slurs are far worse than calling someone a carrot top?

Good they must ban him for as long as possible.

Elther so do you think during football matches the fans making monkey noises and acting like monkeys when a black player has the ball is acceptable?

Do you think Racism is acceptable because i get that feeling from your post that racial slurs are just fine in your eyes.

Well said!
The amount of times I've been racially insulted would make me a prime candidate for compensation but do I give a flying ****? No because if I'm honest, I'm white, and Cracker sounds like a serial killers name.

Don't forget though you can only be racist if you're white....

There's no place for either of these words in sport. Good for the ATP, you've gotta clean things up. These guys are professionals and although the pressure is tremendous they must act in a sporting manner.

The k-word is derogatory and we all know it, why intentionally try to hurt someone like that just to win? If these players don't have a moral compass to guide them then the ATP is obligated to 'help out' :D.
 
What's new, another day, myBB members justifying racial slurs (because "white people are not insulted by these things")...

What if the Aussie is a great tennis player? I think it is a bit harsh.

I stand by my statements’ I'm proud to be white and nothing anybody calls me will change that.
And yes by saying that i'm saying i'm glad not to be black.
And i'm sticking to saying that if you were proud to be black you would start doing what gays do.

Advertise that you are the K word proudly!! My word people the world are celebrating all the things blacks had to overcome.
Just to make a point if i were black i would start wearing T-Shirts saying i'm Proudly K.


So yes i'm not insulted by being called a W Bastard. I would rather be that than a B Bastard.
 
Well you don't see roger or nadal racially abusing opponents do you and they are great players?

Does being a great player mean you can racially abuse people?

See this is what irks me, you're having a go at forumites for being proud of being white, yes the guy shouldn't have used the K word in a public place, my point stands, apparently you can only be racist if you're white...

No, I am saying it is not ok to call people the K-word.
Others are saying it is not ok for people to be offended by the k-word because
other races (well only whites anyway) have no problem with racial slurs.
 
Exactly larry, seems like white people think they have some sort of right to racial slurs just because they do not get offended by it.

I agree it’s wrong to use racial slurs, but in the end that guy saying the K word is making a bigger fool of himself that the person he is calling it.

Dude, people have been using the K word for centuries, obviously not in the South African context, but it's been around for a while. The use of the K word as a derogatory word is not only found in S.A., I've come across it here in the U.K. and on my travels around the world.

I agree it's not supposed to be used in public, and especially by a sportsman, but his punishment is out of proportion.

Let's reverse the roles for a second, say a black player (Can't think of a name here so someone help me out) called a white player a cracker in the middle of play, what do you think his punishment would be? Nothing is my guess, and that is what I believe is wrong with the world today.

We've become way too politically correct for my liking, call a spade a spade for god sakes. They're only words and it's not like he was inciting violence. When I do something (like slamming my fingers in the door etc) I shout out Po3s!!! without thinking about it.

I think that's what's happened here...

Believe me i live with racial slurs almost every week with friends and family and it's flippin disgusting.

Retro please point me to a link where a black sportsman has racially abused a white player? I'm pretty sure google is packed full of racial slurs towards black people and you would be hard pressed to find it the other way around. Your argument that racial slurs are fine is a stupid one. You want to call someone a K***** do it in the privacy of your home or amounst your friends not during a sporting event.

As far as i know whites in this country have never been oppressed and told they cannot go into this area or that area, nor have they been racially abused like the black people so maybe you should try and understand why black people get offended.
