Vodacom’s WiMax play

Well boo-hoo-hoo to Vodacom. Serves you right for trying to stick all your fingers in all the pies.

I hope they are allocated ZERO Wimax Spectrum. Also, I hope they don't delay this process by taking ICASA to court. They should either sell their stake in iBurst, or swallow up iBurst as a whole - something which is unlikely to happen given the shareholder structure of iBurst / WBS.

Lets hope ICASA sticks to their guns for a change, and doesn't cower when the big bullies come knocking at their door.
 
If I have a vote, I would vote that all new spectrum must go to NEW companies only. Further it must be against regulations for one telecoms company to have any shareholding in any other telecoms company. Increasing the competitors, can only be good for the public.

EDIT: I have nothing against any current companies, just think it would be better to have 8 companies rather than 4.

Well thats the rule of law in India.

Every Spectrum band is allocated to a new company.

Whether they develop a network using the spectrum or sell it to some other company. There's more companies providing the Service.

More Competition lower prices.

This is already in place...

There are however a few restrictions, including that an applicant cannot have already been granted a licence in the designated band and a company cannot be an affiliate or hold more than 5% in another applicant in the same band.
