Smartphone picks

Most consumers looking to upgrade their mobile phones are now looking for smartphone features. We look at some of the best

Hey! You obviously have not done your homework on the Iphone 3g S! I know of no know other phone with better HSDPA!!!!!! The 3g S actually does have full 7.2Mbp!
Mike

Can't really call this thread "The best smartphones" when it doesn't have the best selling smartphones in its list. I might be wrong, but as far as i know the BlackBerry have the largest market share of smart phones in the world, and they haven't made this review...

i thought the constraint was not a phones HSDPA capabilities but the networks ability to provide 7.2Mbps

It is a bit of a shallow review.

I found it a little ironic that the cover picture depicts so many other affordable/mainstream options like BB, Nokia, samsung smartphones, yet the review only covers Iphone (bah) HTC (expensive & sluggish) and Palm Pilot (??)

Nokia smartphones now work with activesync, and I used to be a BB hater as well, but now that I've actually worked with the BES server I have to say it is nothing short of magic, especially with a nice phone like the 9000.

what is activesync?

Some clear HTC bias by that "reporter".

A quick search online shows most other "experts" making mention of the odd Nokia and Blackberry phones....

CNET Reviews 14 Aug 2009
Apple iPhone 3G S
RIM BlackBerry Curve 8900
Nokia E71x
Samsung Omnia
Palm Pre (Sprint)

PCWorld
BlackBerry Storm
BlackBerry Bold 9000
Apple iPhone 3G
BlackBerry Curve 8320
Samsung Omnia

No HTC mentioned anywhere.... :)

I've seen and used sh*t loads of phones. There is no phone better than the iPhone 3GS!

Blazingly fast!!!! Awesome in ways you have yet to understand. It truly is a piece of marvelous gadgetry!!! Smooth, user friendly, awesome apps, 3g/hsdpa super fast, gps, compass, accelorometer, etc etc etc....

I have yet to find a phone with touch screen capabilities as smooth and fast as the new iphone 3gs. Its just super!!!! And with the widescreen keyboard i honestly thought that having a full qerwty keyboard as keys in stead of touch screen would be better, i was completely wrong. I type even faster on the touch screen keyboard. Once again thanks to the smooth UI and blazingly fast processor!! You cannot go wrong with this phone.

I am struggling to put it down. I dont want to work and eat... I cant stop playing with the phone!!! Amazing!!!!!!

Does anyone have any contact details for Palm? I can't find a local website for them. In fact, not much comes up in a ZA Google search. Thanks.

To be very honest, after much research over several months, the iPhone beats all contenders hands-down. And no, I don't have one, yet.

I am very disappointed with Nokia, the brand I've been with longest. The N97 is a half-baked product released before it was market ready. It's not rearly a flagship product in this segment. Jack of all trades but master of none. Ovi sucks and the applications are expensive. The E72 must save Nokia. I just cannot see myself with a Nokia in the next two years ...

The HTC Touch Pro 2 with a 250MB data plan, to compare it with the iPhone, is just too expensive. No way I'll pay R599 (MTN) and then another R140 for data. Awesome device, especially with Windows Phone coming soon. If R100 could be cut off the contract price I'll seriously consider getting one.

The BlackBerry Bold comes closer to being a winner, but does it's software match in quality and price what Apple offers? My research says "no". It's got too few things to excite a user for an extended period (24 months on contract), but it's as solid as a rock. A new Bold 9700 is apparently on the way ... but it may take up to 4 months before we'll see it. The other Berry's without 3G/HSDPA just doesn't cut ot for me as a "now" smartphone. The flatrate BIS is however a deal maker so I'm serious looking at getting the Bold for the BIS. If only the new Bold could come sooner ...

The HTC Hero has much potential. Wish we can be informed when we'll get it locally. The Hero with a hard keyboard - at a R550 pm pricepoint with data (MTN AT350 or similar with data) will win me over immediately. The Dream looks like a cheap chinese-made toy, so it's not an option.

The iPhone just wins every comparison I've made. If only one with a hard keyboard was available ... but I may just try to live with the soft one. The lack of real competition may just force me to.

where the hell is the N97? Blackberry hands down for email. Everything else nokia in my opinion.

The article discussed the Palm Pre, not the Pilot.

I've had a Palm Treo 650 and 680 - and now a Samsung i780. All 3 have been excellent and I eagerly await the Palm Pre ;)

I find the people who complain most about iPhone are the ones who don't have one. I've used every which brand of smartphone, and the the iPhone is in a different league altogether. Maybe the palm pre is a little closer than the rest in playing iPhone-catchup, but that's about it.

-Ex Nokia fan.

Also looking at getting the Hero. I dont think there is a hero with keyboard - havent seen any announcements or reviews.

Umm..... You forgot to mention BlackBerry.

The smartest smartphone.

* Ever tried to open (let alone search) an iphone phonebook with 10,000 entries? Instant on BB...

* Which phone are you allowed to use if you work for CIA, FBI, DOD, etc? Only BlackBerry... (AES256bit Encryption)

* Which phone is the only one with unlimited data plan in SA? BlackBerry!

Exactly my point!! Staff writer (sorry to pick on you) needs to go re-research, or maybe just research before he posts an article.

I don't own an iPhone, but, it may have less features and stuff, but in the end, it as the article says, has clas. A certain vibe that beats any other phone
