I loaded a 150MB Broadband Advanced bundle on a pre-paid SIM card in July.
When connected with MDMA I could see the downlink profile was 7168kbps.
I ran some tests and put the SIM away.

Today I wanted to do some more tests, but upon connecting found the downlink profile was only 3584kbps.
I called 155 and spent nearly an hour trying to get the problem resolved, in the end the consultant gave up and logged a service request.
He assured me that a Broadband Advanced bundle should be 7.2Mbps for the full period of the data bundle, in this case from 2009/07/11 until 2009/09/01.

Anyone else seen this?

Thanks. Just tried now and it's still 3.6, will try again tonight.
Any ideas what happened?
Why couldn't 155 see my profile and fix the problem?

I have higher level access , i use certain apps they are not allowed to use because of security reasons.

Thanks

So no ideas as to what went wrong, or how widespread it was then?

I think this is something that needs to be addressed. It was really difficult trying to explain to the consultant what the problem was, and I had to convince him not to log it as a coverage complaint. If he could have seen my profile, he would have known straight away.

Hi

I' know i listened to the 30min call and the call back and the drug comment you made that flew over his head. :D

The issue is been addressed now by me.

@VD: Can you do this again please? This SIM has dropped back down to 3.6 even though it has a 150MB Broadband Advanced bundle loaded on it.

I'll PM you the number again.

I've just spent over 20 minutes to 155 trying to convince the agent to log this call, eventually he agreed to re-open the previous call. He said the reference number would be sent by SMS to the number I called from, but it hasn't come through yet.

A word of advice: Do not tell 155 that you are using Ubuntu and a dashboard doesn't appear when you plug in the modem.

Update: My reference number came through by SMS at 12:53, it's S2-Y9N2K-K. Isn't that a bit short?

The engineer assigned to this query sent me an SMS on the SIM that had the fault saying he was unable to call me, and that I should contact him on 155. I have tried several times during the past week to reach him; 155 say they'll send him an email with my telephone numbers, once they tried to put me through but I ended up stuck in the 'customer satisfaction' IVR.

I've just tried calling again and was told the call was closed. When I last checked, early this morning, I still had not received a refund.

It seems to me that there is a problem with Broadband Advanced bundles; some time during the second month (either on the 1st or after 30 days) they drop from 7.2 to 3.6.
No wonder people have been complaining about not getting 7.2.

What contact numbers did you give?

Thanks VD! I received a call from the tech working on this, he gave me a refund and I purchased a new 150MB Broadband Advanced bundle. He says the original issue is still under investigation so I will keep an eye on the assigned profile to see that it stays at 7.2.

Confirmed, the problem occurs on the 1st of the new month.

I checked at 23:30 last night and I was still on the 7.2 profile, this morning I'm back on 3.6. This is now on a different SIM card to the one that it happened to twice previously.

I purchased the bundle on 2009/11/19 so I only ended up with 12 days on 7.2.

When I wanted to reply to a post on this forum earlier I noticed probably the best ever unintended demonstration of the difference between "Standard" and "Advanced"

On the MyBB forum you have an option at the bottom to submit a Quick Reply. Just below the message box you have an option "Go Advanced". Click on that and voila, you have a number of options, such as different fonts, font sizes, smilies :) etc. Compared to the Standard Quick Reply this is really "Advanced"!

Now take VC's "Standard" and "Advanced" data bundles. A small percentage of users opting for the "Advanced" data bundle might get exactly the same data a little bit faster (backhaul issues) at a 21% higher price (1Gb), the rest only start benefiting after they have actually used the data bundle and the rate stays the same. So what is so "Advanced" about the "Advanced" bundle then? Especially now that it seems VC's system is scr3wing you on the "Advanced" bundle's carry over...

Call it a "Flat Rate" bundle, because that's what it is.

@vd: Why don't you just enable the 7.2 profile for everyone?

This will bring you back in line with Telkom and MTN who don't charge extra for 7.2; it's simple, those who can get it, get it, and those who can't, don't.

It would be a nice surprise xmas present for Vodacom customers, you've told us there's no turkey on your tables for us this year.

I don't see how Vodacom can lose doing this, you keep telling people not to subscribe to BB-A for the speed, and you charge by the megabyte anyway, so faster speeds mean people will use up their bundles sooner and buy more.

Just a question. I bought a Advanced Mymeg 150 yesterday to test it. Used some of my airtime I accumilated on my redundant Fam Top Up. I got a average speed of 60 - 80kBps. Downloaded 115meg in 30 minutes. That is not 7.2 right? If it was then it would have been 600 - 700kBps? Or am I converting it wrong?
