New mobile location service without GPS

I see... new as in new company... new group doing this...
it already works pretty well with mobile gmaps...

Those who use the location services also tend to spend more money on data transfers each month.

Likely related to the freeware software working with online maps... gmaps, nav4all, etc.

I don't buy their claim that triangulation can provide better than GPS accuracy tho.

I agree mbp, gmaps also mad this huge noise when they started supporting triangulation. Didn't turn out to be all that good. In the end gps will remain the positioning tool of choice
 
I thought GPS accuracy is less than 40m?

I guess I can kinda get why using fixed points to triangulate can give relatively high accuracy, but then AGPS is probably higher.
 
According to them, triangulation does 1-40m... GPS is normally consistently below 5m when outdoors.

Indoors is totally another thing...

apparently they are saying that they can do it better than other methods:

Triangulation techniques that provide a location fix have long been available, but have never been as accurate as GPS. GloPos aims to change this, with their new technology that can position a user to within 40 metres, using data packets as small as 100Kb.

Within 40 meters isn't bad! Google Maps is often off by 1000m or more, which isn't that helpful - 40 meters could at least put you within seeing distance of your calculated location.
 
I don't think the google maps being off is a result of poor google tech, it's more to do with lack of positioning details wrt the towers in your area - especially where towers are old and outdated... perhaps I'm wrong?

But I am keen to hear what this 'new tech' is... prolly quadrangulation or pentangulation or something such lol
 
I have been able to get the accuracy down to an astonishing 5m on an old Nokia N80 that has no GPS or A-GPS present. So triangulation can be pretty good !
