Interconnect rates of 60c from November: Parliament

So, MTN with its retarded Anytime. Is this going to become cheaper?

I cannot believe the discarded the MTN->MTN call discount. My whole family was on MTN for this reason. Since their change, two have moved to VC, as the incentive to stay has been lost. MTN's loss.

If the interconnect fee drops, I assume the call rates should come down across the board...

That should be the case. But I wouldnt be surprised if we are suddenly slapped with another levy or something.

Yes! Finally! Now please acknowledge that this has been an ongoing problem for nearly a decade now... and that the only solution is to completely disband ICASA and give the mandate to the Competition Commission or a newly formed aggressive and independent regulatory body.

ICASA is a dismal pathetic failure. My 84 year old grandma could have done a better job with half her brain tied behind her back while cooking breakfast for seven people in the dark.

Yep, in theory the prices should come down, but the reduction in interconnect rates will most probably be made up by some other BS tariff introduced
 
1 November will never happen, the cellular providers will just lock it into a 5 year court case. No government can force an independant company to change it's rates. This is a political mirror trick.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the "independent" companies require a license to operate?

Personally I dont expect much by the deadline except for excuses.

Then they'll lose their licences to operate... remember, the government allocates the licences - and if somebody doesn't want to play ball, licence might get revoked.

Will have to see what happens though. If the government can pull it through...
 
Companies like skype might actually start putting south africa on the list of free calls once it gets low enough.

Why the frack don't they just draft a very simple law: "Any network operator that charges more than 60c per minute interconnect fee from 1st Nov 2009 will pay a fine of R1 billion per day as long as their interconnect fee exceeds 60c"

That should fix it quickly.

Stating that prices are to high and that they should come down won't help anyone, ffs.
 
This article is really encouraging and I'm liking what seems to be a hard-nosed approach to the operators and the lack lustre members at ICASA.

How would one participate in order to heed the call for public submissions?
I want my voice heard and as many others that I can get involved!

And excuse my ignorance here, but the article makes mention of the interconnect rates during peak times.
Is there a difference during off peak?
What is that cost currently?
That should come down as well.

Nail them to the wall and lets get this sorted!

I agree and have said it before. It will mean losing face with shareholders and profit projections. There are some big players here and don't expect them to go down without a fight.

They will simply lumber us with something else to support their income streams.:confused:

Ja, they should just call an emergency seating of Parliment and amend the damn ECA which actually protects the country, economy and most importantly it's people!

These companies post huge profits every financial year and would claim that the market is tough and not easy to make money in!
We've seen what VC and the rest post as a profit every year.
We've also seen what Rueben September walks away with every year - and they still claim that it's "tough" - yeah, tough to decide which car, property or vaction spot to go to next. :rolleyes:

This move will not bring down call charges, BUT, it will mean that companies that want to compete now have the barrier of R0.60 instead of R1.25.

And, when that company actually competes, then we'll see changes. Until then, nothing.
