SAT-3 and SAFE upgraded to 340 Gbps and 440 Gbps

And yet the cost per gig on adsl remains the same..
 
Kind of sickening, Telkom have had the ability to upgrade SAT3 for quite some time, but only do so now that there's competition. They just love screwing Joe public at every junction.
 
None of this makes a difference to the average South African or small business. We are still stuck in the Dark Ages! More of this 'same old same old' and we will soon be far behind the rest of Africa in terms of technological advancements.
 
I'm impressed that that Telkpm spoke to MyBroadband. I just hope MyBB asked them many more pertinent questions than just cable utilisation, and that the answers to these will be the topics of future articles.

With overseas bandwidth costs fast becoming a non-topic, it is quite clear that the only thing holding up artificially high broadband costs in SA is Telkom's stranglehold on the local loop and the cripplingly high and duplicate charges and they force on both retail customers and ISPs to access it.

Seacom and Telkom cable

Although the undersea cables are only part of the total operating costs of the ISPs - it must still form a considerable portion. This portion has shown a large drop because of the reduction in the undersea cable part of that cost. We appreciate that local loop and national backbone costs are still high - but that still doesn't explain why there has been no significant reduction in their fees to reflect the cheaper wholesale prices of international bandwidth prices. I am with WEBAFRICA on a 3Gigabyte monthly package and haven't seen any reduction in their fee to me. Cynically they appear to be looking after their big customers only - hence the reduction to 10Gigabyte and over - customers. It constantly amazes me that ISPs/Telkom etc cannot see the bigger picture in that significant reduction in prices would, in all probability, result in far more customers
 
Local Loop

Amazing how quickly government has been able to take action on reduction of interconnect fees for cellphones - yet we hear nothing of the local loop unbundling? - Yet this would have a dramatic effect on bandwidth. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the government no longer has an interest in Vodacom - but still has a considerable interest in Telkom?
 
What I really like is the blatant cheek and unmitigated galling arrogance of the following statement which is really the crux of the matter:

Now how will demand rise when prices are still so astronomically high?

So the excretion that Meyer is spewing from his foul orifice is that: We're not buying enough to make it cheap. Now since when did "Economies Of Scale" become a "Demand Pull"? Economies of scale are achieved by lowering the costs of production and then being able to using the lower cost product to win over the market.

In sunny ZA we may be crazy but we're not stupid...

Oh and for those who may remember the early ADSL years when customers using 30GB were labelled as "abusing the network".
Well now Meyer which one shall it be:
Unlock the pent up demand to easily have your "economies of scale"?
OR
Label your best customers as "abusers" of 'your' precious precious network?

R970 000 for STM-1 2009

So you're saying that, compared with the R399 for 3gigs we paid +- in 2002. And the R199 +- we pay for 3 gigs now (excluding afrihost)... that those are "significant" savings passed onto the public????? Is this the "economy of scale" he talked about?!

The price to us dropped by 50% between then and now but the price dropped for them by 690%?!!!!!

My ass is so sore right now I feel like I'm going to be sick...

Oh great, Telkom have found that economies of scale thingy again, yay :yawn:

Telkom trying to re-invent themselves after more than a decade of ripping the public a new one, with completely out of line costs, and the governments blessing.

I bet the herd of elephants that are the consumers have a longer memory than the one that pocketed all the dosh, with his pals.

Bring on the independent providers!
